WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WEST COAST FEDERATION. At a meeting of the West Coast Federation Executive Committee of Women's Institutes, held recently, the following members were present: — Mrs Stewart (president), Mesdames Bassett, Mclntyre, Oliver, Leitch, Parkhill, Paterson, and Duff. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Rankin and Miss Snieaton. It was resolved that a letter of sympathy be sent to Mrs Rankin in her recent bereavement. The agenda paper for the halfyearly Council meeting, to be held at Hokitika on October 27, was approved. Miss Smeaton’s resignation as secretary of the executive was received with, regret, and Mrs Duff (Reefton) was appointed in hei’ place. It was decided to hold the matter of a dressmaker tutor in abeyance, until further particulars were available, and, if possible, to discuss the matter at the half-yearly Council meeting.

Mrs Duff gave a. report of her recent visit to Christchurch, as a delegate to a conference representing the Women’s Institutes and Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union of Canterbury and Westland, regarding an entertainment at the Centennial Exhibition. Mrs Duff reported that it was decided to obtain lecturers for the time allotted to the Canterbury and Westland Federation. It was decided that, as only two or three exhibits had been received by the Federation to be forwarded on to the Centennial Exhibition, that these be returned to the exhibitors. Circulars were received from the Dominion Federation regarding war emergency plans, and it was decided that these be sent out to branches.
