ITALIAN INTERESTS

MENACED BY GERMANY POSITION IN THE BALKANS [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Received September 8, 1 p.m.). NEW YORK, September 7. The Rome Correspondent of the “New York Times” says that, if Polish resistance collapses, Germany, will be free to turn her attention in other directions, and it is expected that the Balkans will be first to feel the weight of the Reich’s new strength, -thus touching Italy’s vital interests. If there is war in that Peninsula, Rome could with difficulty continue her neutrality. On the other hand, there is talk of II Duce mediating, after Warsaw is taken, the Germans thinking England and France will abandon Poland, despite the former’s denials. It is believed that II Duce will not agree. Italian feeling is that he will lay himself open to a certain rebuff. It must be remembered that Signor Mussolini’s policies in these days are Italian, not German-Italian.
