FLATS FOR WORKERS

OLD ETONIANS’ PLAN LONDON, June 21. The first undertaking of the Old Etonian Housing Association, formed in 1937 to construct or improve dwelling houses for the working and industrial classes, and supported mainly by Old Etonians, was opened at Highbury, N., yesterday by the Princess Royal. Eton House, as it is named, contains 40 flats built on the site of a manor house and garden at Leigh-road, Highbury. The opening by the Princess Royal took the form of the unveiling of a tablet. Because of heavy rain the opening speeches were made in an adjoining church hall. Caroline Viscountess Bridgeman, thanking the Islington Borough Council for the help it had given the Association, said that £4,000 was still required to see them clear of the cost of the undertaking.

The Mayor of Islington, Aiderman D. McArthur Jackson, said the thanks of the Borough Council were due to the Association for its help in dealing with the housing problem in the borough, where more than 6,000 families were living in overcrowded conditions. After the Princess Royal had inspected a number of the flats and was taking tea in the church hall, it was discovered that the youngest resident of the flats, James Etoli Harvey, one month-old son of Mrs. Louisa Harvey.’ had not been presented’"to ’ the Princess. Mrs. Harvey, with her baby, was brought into the hall by the head master of Eton, Mr. Claude Elliott, and were received by the Princess Royal.
