GENERAL WAR SITUATION

STATEMENTS IN COMMONS. [BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.] (Recd. September 7, 1 p.m.) RUGBY, September 6. Mr. Chamberlain told Mr. Greenwood, in the Commons, that he hoped to be in a position, to-morrow, to make a statement on the general war situation, and he promised to consider the possibility of making periodic statements of this character, to keep the House and the country informed. Messages have been received at the Dominions Office from Australia, New Zealand, Victoria, and Western Australia, expressing lively pleasure at the appointment of Mr. Eden, and promising fullest co-operation with the new Dominions Secretary. Mr. Butler, replying to a Commons question, said: “No official communications on neutrality have been received from Russia, Italy, Japan, or Spain, but, according to an official announcement made in Rome on September 1, Italy will take no initiative in the way of military operations. Lord Halifax has been informed that a declaration of neutrality was issued by Spain at Burgos on September 4. Japan has defined her attitude as one of non-intervention.”
