THE COMPETITIONS
NEXT WEEK’S FESTIVAL
Progress of modern civilisation depends for its existence and furtherance on individuals and organisations vicing with each other in an endeavour io outstrip each other, and thus ultimately achieve the top rungs in the ladder of success. Good clean competition brings out the best in us and helps to keep us from falling into a rut and becoming stagnant. Youth is the life blood of to-morrow, and every endeavour should be made to give them every opportunity of being equipped with the qualities and confidence to meet the difficulties of the future. Thus, is behoves us all to give every assistance to our own youth by showing every interest in their endeavours to achieve general approbation and attain the higher standards in their own particular lines.
The forthcoming Competitions Festival in Greymouth, commencing on Monday will give not only the opportunity of showing a real interest in youth’s endeavour to achieve higher levels, but also to assist materially in the general success of their efforts. This year the numerous competitors in the various sections will provide a very interesting contest, and the standard of the entrants is undoubtedly up to that of any previous year and will ensure everyone of first-class entertainment. Although it is generally accepted that the mere honour of being placed by the judges in the competitions is a sufficient reward to the competitors, the Society has this year decided to award cash prizes in addition to the cups donated, and the usual challenge cups, in order to help defray the competitors’ incidental expenses. /
