[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] MAN FOUND HANGING. TIMARU, August 24. Harry Reginald Brown, 37, who has a wife and six children, was found hanging in a shed at his home, 87 Avenue Road, about midday. The New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation issued the following statement to-day: We have been keeping closely in touch with the Government and the Reserve Bank in the matter of the availability of exchange for materials and supplies necessary for keeping the wheels of industry turning. The present position is causing the Federation grave concern, but, before coming to a considered opinion, w r e are awaiting a further statement from the Government.

AFTER-HOUR TRADING. WELLINGTON, August 25. Mr. Luxford, S.M., in dealing with a change of liquor selling out of hours, said, “There is no doubt the sale of liquor in licensed premises, in Wellington, is getting out of hand.” The facts disclosed showed that, at the time of the raid, there were about GO men in the bar. Mr. Luxford remarked that prosecutions brought by the police every Friday disclosed that after-hour trading was becoming the usual thing, instead of being exceptional. CONSCRIPTION ADVOCATED. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 24._ The “Taranaki Daily News” will publish to-morrow a full-page open appeal to the Government to reconsider the decision against compulsory military service. The appeal gives full credit to the Government for its present energetic defence policy. It says: “This is not enough, and the national character is as much involved' as the purely-defence issue.” The article maintains that the calibre of New Zealand youth is deteriorating for various reasons. It also asserts that careful investigation among a

cross-section of Taranaki opinion reveals a distinct change of attitude towards compulsory training. The belief is expressed that public opinion would support an alteration in the Government policy. It suggests that this should strengthen the hand of the Government in making a change.
