REEFTON NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

REEFTON, August 24. Ar. the Magistrate’s Court, on Tuesday. before Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M. a charge of driving a motor-car on a road without exercising due care and attention, brought by the police against Pete Bradly, was dismissed. Hugh F. Lewis, for assaulting Thomas H. Bennett, and Robert E. Park, for a similar offence, were each fined £1 and ordered to pay witnesses expenses. The charge arose from a disagreement which occurred at the fire station, when Firemen Bennett and Parrish were entertaining friends. The two defendants came to the station, and entered the private room occupied as sleeping quarters by Bennett and Parrish. A difference of opinion arose, and led to a scuffle, and one of the party going for the police. The Fire Brigade asked the police to take action. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the case of W. J. Duff v. Henry Kearns, for 14/6, with costs 8/-. On a judgment summons, Alex Day was ordered to pay to W. Blom £2 7/6, in default three days’ imprisonment. An application for a maintenance order by Phyllis Perry against her husband, Andrew Perry, was granted, and an order was made for the payment of £2 per week, £l2 past maintenance, and costs £l/11/6. Mild temperatures are now prevailing in Reef ton. The presence of snow on the mountain ranges has not brought the expected heavy frosts. Mr. Fred Harewood, of Soldiers’ Rottft, Reefton, suffered a broken leg at Blackwater Mine, Waiuta, when'he was caught by a fall of stone. He was brought to Reefton for medical attention. Only a short time ago Mr. Harewood had his home destroyed by fire and had no insurance covering his loss. The death occurred yesterday, of Mr. Charles Walsh, a native of Ballarat, aged 74 years. Deceased, who was single, had resided in Reefton for over 60 years. He is survived by one brother, Mr. Patrick Walsh, and one sister, Mrs. Crabb, of Reefton. The interment will be private.
