'• Cobb broke the record, with an offlcial speed of 368.85 miles per hour. On the first run, he averaged 370.75 - m.p.h., and on the return run 366.97 -y m.p.m. Cobb also broke the kilometre record, with a speed of 369.74 miles per -? hour, the former record being 350.07. He said that the wind bothered.: 4 ' him slightly as he,reached the south* end. “I slowed down slightly. I , knew that I had gone ■ fast enough on the northward run, for the record, so I wanted to be sure that I would get back.” He added: “My motto is safety 2 first, even at six miles per minute.” ? Cobb.-indicated that he might try - for still-faster time.
