Fairclough left, to-day, for Christchurch. Passengers by Cook Strait Airways West Coast service to-day were: Wel-lington-Greymouth: Miss K. Danetree, Mr. P. O’Neill; Nelson-Greymouth: Mr. B. V. Rope; Greymouth-Welling-ton: Mr. W. Kennedy. Mr. F. L. Turley returned last evening, from Wellington, where, at a special meeting of the National Council of the New Zealand Timber Workers’ Union, he was re-elected National Secretary. Miss K. Danetree, examiner for the Royal Academy of' Dancing, London, arrived by this morning’s air service, from Wellington. She is conducting the Academy examinations at Greymouth, this afternoon and to-morrow, and will leave to-morrow evening, for Christchurch.

The Controller and Auditor-General, Mr. J. H. Fowler, will retire at the end of this month, having completed 44 years’ service. Mr. Fowler- has spent the whole of his official career in the Department. He succeeded the late Colonel Campbell in March, 1937. —Press Assn.

The wedding took place at Westport on Tuesday of Miss C. McCubbin, of Westport, and Mr. J. G. Smart, pf Greymouth, and formerly of Westport. Mr. and Mrs. Smart left, this morning, for Wellington. Mr. Smart was presented with a firescreen .by members of the clerical and engineering staffs of the Public Works Department, Westport.

Members of the Westport Public Works Department office staff met on Tuesday afternoon to make a presentation to Mr. J. Smart, a former member of the Westport staff, and now of Greymouth, on the occasion of his marriage to Miss C. McCubbin. Mr. A. G. Park engineer for the Public Works Department, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr. Smart with a firescreen. Other speakers were Messrs. B. Gardener and F. Boord and Miss Joyce Brown. Mr. Smart suitably replied.

Mr. John Dowgray, a director of the Bank of Nev.' Zealand and member of the Buller Hospital Beard, has been elected unopposed to the Buller County Council, .filling the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr. D. Kerr (Ngakawau Riding), who has left the district. Mr. Dowgray was nominated by members of the Hector branch of the New Zealand Labour Party.

At the conclusion of the Court’s sittings at Reefton, yesterday, which was Mr. Raymond Ferner’s last • appearance in Reefton as S.M. and Warden, Mr. L. E Morgan, senior solicitor, took advantage of the occasion to farewell the departing S.M. He regretted Mr. Ferner’s departure, not only because he had the confidence of all, but that his decisions had been based on justice. He wished him success in his new sphere. Mr. K. Patterson endorsed Mr. Morgan’s remarks. Mr. W. B. Auld, who represented the Justices of the Peace, also ■referred to Mr. Ferner’s departure with regret, as did Sergeant Ebbett and Mr. Sharpe (Clerk of Courts). In replying, Mr. Ferner said he regretted leaving the West Coast, as, his residence had been made pleasant by the good companionship of all. He thanked them for their kind remarks, and wished them and the district success.
