“MOST CONTEMPTIBLE”

DENNISTON MINER’S THEFT [PEB PBESB ASSOCIATION.] WESTPORT, August 23. Describing the offences as most contemptible, Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M., sentenced Henry E. Arneson, coal miner, Denniston, in the Magistrate’s Court, to-day, to one month’s imprisonment on a charge of theft of a gold watch chain and locket, the property of William Seacombe,. and to three months’ imprisonment on a charge of theft of'a gold watch chain and other articles valued at £5O, the property of John Colligan. Arneson pleaded guilty to both charges.

Sergeant H. Russell said that Arneson took the chains and other gold articles from the old men when he accompanied them home on the evening of July fl from the Alpine Hotel. He later admitted sending the stolen property to Christchurch, where it was recovered, to be sold as rolled gold. Some of the articles had been badly damaged, said the sergeant.

Arneson said that he was intoxicated on the night of the offence, and when he realised that he had the stolen articles the next day he did not admit taking them immediately for the fear of police action. The S.M. said that Arneson was fortunate not to be facing a more serious charge.
