BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. | HOKITIKA, Avgust 21. The meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. W. 11. SLoplorth, .1. Fox, .1. L. Turner, G. Heinz, A. R. Elcock, F. D. E. Freitas, and D. P. Stuart. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. H. T. Parry and C. Caliari. Tho Treasurer reported receipts £765/11/7; expenditure Accounts amounting to £llB9/2/16 were passed for payment. z A deputation comprising Messrs B. F. Hunter, K. Reece, and H. Preston, irotn the Hokitika Aero Club, asked the Council for permission co hold a concert in the Regent Theatre on Sunday, September 3. —Granted. A number of State house tenants waited on the Council with regard to the reading of a section of Davie Street.—The Mayor explained this matter had been arranged with the Department and would be nut in hand as soon as possible. The Ross Borough Council invited the Councl to a meeting of local body delegates to discuss the hospital levies.—Crs. Elcock, Turner the Mayor were appointed delegates. Cr. Elcock was appointed the Council’s representative on the High School Board. Donations totalling £lll were received from 16 subscribers in the town for the painting and renovating of the outside of the Town Hall. Abattoir report:—Stock slaughteied for month of July: 38 cows, 28 heifers, 76 bullocks, 283 sheep, 45 lambs, 13 pigs, 11 calves; condemned three cows, one heifer. Fees collected £BO/14/-,, compared with £7l/4/- tor the corresponding month last year. The Controller of Civil Aviation advised that the scale of landing charges on the Hokitika Aerodrome is under consideration, but a decision cannot be reached until further investigation is made in the matter of the rates of the various bodies interested in the ownership and' control of the aerodrome. Mr R. Herring wrote tendering his resignation as caretaker, and asking that the resignation take effect about the end of October; also tendering his thanks to the Council for consideration. —Received with regret. Mr Robert Fleming, Revell Street, wrote, stating that the watercourse which runs through the back of his property is blocked and asking that the Council have the watercourse cleaned out. —Referred to the WorksCommittee.

Mrs A. M. Appleton, Livingstone Street, asked that the gorse along'the frontage of her sections be cleared, and also that street drainage be attended to, as some of the land which is suitable for building has no reasonable access. —Referred to the Works Committee.

Mrs Rose Butler wrote stating that she is waiting to build a dwelling on Section 503, Hoffman Street, and would be glad of the Council’s decision in regard to the formation of a roadway to her section. —Referred to the Works. Committee-

The Hokitika Beautifying Association wrote pointing out the necessity for a definite stock route through the Borough.—Referred to Town Clerk to report. The Hokitika Businessmen’s Association wrote regarding the nonparking of cars in Revell Street, and stating that a llve-minutes’ limit was too short. —Deferred for further consideration. Cr. Stopforth reported on necessary improvements to the playing area of Cass Square. He said they would be undertaken by the sporting bodies, without expense to the Council. —The Council approved the proposal tentatively. To Cr. Turner, the Town Clerk replied that arrears of rates, spread over the past three years, amounted to £2501/1/6. Cr. Turner said that while money was spent on filling up potholes the town would never get ahead of itself. A comprehensive programme of good tar-sealing was necessary. The Town Clerk stated that if the rates were spread uniformly over the whole body of ratepayers, each one would be called on for over £ll per annum.
