[ter press association.] FATALITY AT QUARRY. WHANGAREI, August 22. An inquest on Gavin Charles- Cotter, who died in hospital on July 19. following terrible injuries caused by the explosion of a. drill, which he was dressing at Tauraroa. Quarry, was held to-day. The verdict was that death was due to shock, following an explosion of gelignite which had accidentally got into the drill during earlier boring operations. CYCLIST KILLED BY CAR. AUCKLAND, August 22. Fatal injuries were suffered by a cyclist when he was involved in a. collision with a motor-car in Symonds Street. The victim was Leonard Thomas Kyne Scahill, 27, n married man, of Newton. The, cyclist was coming out of 'Whittaker place, apparently with the intention of riding down Symonds Street toward the city. The car was being driven down Symonds Street by Kenneth Keith. The victim suffered a fractured base of the skull. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital where lie-died. FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE. NELSON, August 21. Arrested in Riwaka early yesterday morning after a mysterious disappearance from Auckland, Eric Stanley Watts, alias Stanley Bray, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Motueka on a charge that, on or about January 17, 1939, at, Auckland, he obtained the sum of £173 from Thomas Arthur Taylor by means of a false pretence, namely, by falsely representing that he was authorised by the T. and G. Assurance Society to sell a. surrender policy that was actually’ held for sale by the firm mentioned, whereas in fact no such policy existed. Constable Smith said that the warrant had been issued from Auckland. Accused was remanded to appear at Auckland on August 23. RADIO REGULATIONS TI.MARU, August 21. Taxi-drivers ami hotelkeepers in Timaru will shortly have an additional burden (o bear, with Hie enforcement of (he regulations covering radio licenses. Taxis with radios will lie obliged to pay full radio license, irrespective of whether the owners have also private radios. Hotels which have a number of extensions from their radios will have to take out a license lor each extension. If they have five or more extensions, however, they can take out a multiple license, which, would prove much cheaper. Private houses with extensions are not aflected unless a house is sublet, and an extension is used for the tenant, as then an extra license will lie necessary.
