The death occurred at Nelson, yesterday, of Miss Caroline Gascoyne, aged 88 years. She was the youngest and last surviving child of the late Colonel Charles Manners Gascoyne, of the sth Bengal Light Cavalry,’who retired and brought his family to Motueka in 1853. Deceased was a sister of the late Mrs. John Greenwood, of Greymouth, and a great-aunt of Mrs. A. V. Oliver, of Greymouth.

Over 60 guests were entertained at Harker’s Tea Rooms on Sunday evening, in honour of the coming-of-age of Miss Mavis MacDonald, of Blaketown. Mr. P. Coll proposed the toast of the guest of the evening. Mr. E. Cressey, uncle of Miss MacDonald replied, and also presented her with the customary golden key. A toast-list was honoured, and community singing was enjoyed.-

Lieutenant Clive Rivett-Carnac, who has been killed in Palestine was a son of the late Mr. C. J. Rivett-Carnac, and Mrs. Rivett-Carnac, of England. He was a second cousin of Commodore J. W. Rivett-Carnac, Commodore Commanding the New Zealand Squadron of the Royal Navy. Lieutenant RivettCarnac was educated at Winchester and Sandhurst and left Sandhurst about five years ago. In 1936 he represented the English public schools in rifle shooting.—Press Assn.

Mr. R. A. McSoriley, of the Magistrate’s Court staff, Greymouth,' who will leave to-day for Queenstown, where he has been .promoted to the position of Clerk of the Court, was met yesterday by members of the legal profession and law- clerks, and presented with a. pen and pencil. The presentation was made by Mr. T. P. Ryati, who congratulated Mr. McSoriley oh his promotion and thanked him for the many courtesies extended. At a later gathering, Mr. McSoriley was farewelled by members of the Court staff and reporters. On their behalf, Mr. Frank Bird, Registrar, presented Mr, McSoriley with a leather wallet. He expressed regret at Mr. McSoriley’s departure, but congratulated him on his well-earned promotion, and wished him every success and happiness. After other speakers had endorsed Mr. Bird’s remarks, Mr. McSoriley, in the course of a brief reply, said he was sorry to leave Greymouth after seven years, but such changes were unavoidable if one was-to advance in the service.
