DAVIS CUP MATCHES

AUSTRALIA v| PHILIPPINES [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONG BEACH (California), July 15. Australia eliminated the Philippines in the American zone of the Lavis Cup competition. Results were: — Singles Quist (Australia) defeated Sanchez (Philippines), 6/1. 6/2, 6/2. Bromwich (Australia) defeated Ampon (Philippines) 8/6, 9/7, 6/3. Doubles Quist and Bromwich (Australia) defeated Sanchez and Ampon (Philippines), 7/5, 6/4, 6/2. The gallery was small, but a touch of colour was lent by the attractive girl programme-sellers dressed in the Filipino national costume. Sanchez was obviously nervous throughout the first set, in which Quist was content to remain on the baseline and outsteady his opponent. Quist came to the net in the closing stages to put away numerous overhead shots. In the second set Quist relaxed and had trouble with his forehand in the fifth, and seventh games, permitting Sanchez to break service in each. Quist stormed the net only occasionally, but was Several times trapped by lobs. In the third set Sanchez took a 2/0 lead, but Quist put on the pressure and drove Sanchez all over the court to take six consecutive games. Quist was hitting to the corners with uncanny accuracy, and unleashing a dazzling array of overhead shots. Sanchez also went to the net after Quist had evened the games, but the Australian was playing daringly and was unbeatable. Covering the court in the'retriever fashion usually associated with “Bitsy” Grant, Ampon, by almost unbelievable saves, forced Bromwich to extra games in two of the three sets. There was not much doubt about the outcome, but 'the Filipino’s stubborn resistance forced Bromwich to extend himself and won the gallery’s applause. Although a severely stubbed toe caused him to limp, ’ Quist was easily the better of the Australians in the doubles. Bromwich was erratic./The Filipinos fought courageously, but suffered because of poor overhead piay. u lie Australiiias’ teamwork was indifferent, and their form iar from their best. BROMWICH DEFEATS SANCHEZ. (Received July 17, 2.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 16. Playing in a manner in direct contrast with yesterday’s sorry showing, Bromwich defeated Sanchez without ceremony, although the Filipino’s game was much improved compared with that in his match with Quist. Bromwich’s two-handed strokes were working perfectly, arid he continually fired deep drives, which found no answer.

Bromwich took the first four games before Sanchez field tfie serve, to win the only game of the .first set. Sanchez took his own service to.open.the .secorid set, whereafter Bromwich swept six games iri a row. In theufinal set Sanchez fought desperately, but could not withstand the . Australian’s relentless baseline attack. Sanchez held the service twice, 'and _ broke through Bromwich’s once. His best position was 1/0. The riiatch lasted 53 minutes.

. INTER-ZONE FINAL.

NEW YORK, July 14

The Davis Cup inter-zone final discussion is developing a variety of interesting features. United States tennis officials point out. that, upon an agreement with the European Davis Cup committee in February, the American authorities put the national doubles feature a week ahead and awarded the doubles and inter-zone final to Boston. Tfie Longwood Cricket. Club, incidentally, underwent considerable expense preparing for the inter-zone final, and would be reluctant to relinquish it.

It is agreed that if the inter-zone final is held at Montreal, the gate would unquestionably be higher. An unofficial’ suggestion is made here that 1 perhaps the Canadian, authorities would recompense Longwood for the initial expenses, and the European zone winners, in order to meet H. C. Hopman’s objections, could agree to participate in the national doubles with the Australians. It would then, perhaps, be possible to hold the inter-zone final at Montreal. The- present date for the doubles week is August 13 and the inter-zone final from August 24 to 28.

AMERICAN MIXED DOUBLES

Pairings for the American mixed doubles championships include Bromwich and Mme. Mathieu (France), Crawford and Miss Nuthall (England). and Hopman and Miss Marble (United States).
