MOANA NOTES

[our own correspondent.] 'The sawmills in the neighbourhood have nearly all resumed working after .the holidays, and with the exception of one' or two instances where employees are not yet' fully/ recovered from attacks of influenza, are working to their full capacity. The rainfall over the week-end. though light, has been welcome, and an ample supply of }vater is.now available for at least a few days. Householders, however, are still anxiously awaiting a downpour. Funds for the work of improving the foreshore of Lake Brunner at Moana are nearing exhaustion, and application is being made for a further grant. The work is being carried ou,t by the Regatta Club and not the Domain and Scenic Reserves Board, as stated in previous notes. A public meeting’ recently took place at hfoana for the purpose of. discussing proposals again to bring before the proper, authorities .the desire of ’ residents to have a bridge constructed over the Arnold River at Moana,' and also a road around the western shore of .the lake towards Mitchell's. Mr N. Peat occupied the chair, and it was resolved to petition Parliament on tfle subject. 1 Camps are being erected for several workmen who will be employed for some time in the construction of a device, at the source of the Arnold River, for the purpose of. recording measurements of water-powqr required in connection witli the Grey Power Board’s .hydro works!

• Sailing and rowing events which have taken place each week for some time past, have been suspended for the time being, but it is expected there will be another series of races arranged after the next club meeting. \ The little fleet of privately-owned launches has lately been augmented. Mr Matt. Benjiie has built and now launched a modern cominodious and well-equipped vessel for the use'of himself and friends, and two young men, R. Coles and M. Birchfield, have acquired' a fact speed boat.

' CHILDJIEN’S BALL. ' A children’s plain and fancy dress ball, promoted by the Moana Regatta Club, was held in the Moana Hall on Saturday evening last, and proved tobe an unqualified success. ■ Practically all the children in' the district were present. In addition to those in fancy costume, many attended in plain, dress. ' The committee responsible for. the arrangements were Messrs W; Williams, F. Klempel, E. Hocking', F., Sullivan, and E. Downie, Mr N. Nestor supplied the music. Mr J. Robinson was M.C. Judges were Mr and' Mrs. Feary and Mr Peat, who also presented club trophies to this year’s winners. Prizes donated by the Regatta Club and also by local residents were won as follow:—Best fancy costume,' girls, Miss M. O’Loughlan; boys, Master J. Dense. Most original costume, | girls, Miss M. Phillipson; boys, Master R. Klempel. Special prizes were awarded to Misses M. Frankpitt, D. Dense, and K. Adler. Costumes were: M. Dense (sailor), M. Phillipson (licenses), C.
