BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, April 18. At a meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council there were present: The Mayor, Mr. G. A. Perry, Councillors W. I-I. A. Stopforth, C. Caliari, J. Fox, F. D. E. Freitas, J. L. Turner, A. R. Elcock, G. Heinz. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. H. T. Parry and D. P. Stuart. At a special meeting held to receive the balance sheet, authority for the calling of tenders for the printing of the balance sheet was given the Town Clerk. A decision was made to increase the bank overdraft up to £3500.

Accounts totalling £1362/8/9 were passed for payment. Receipts were: £682/18/1, and expenditure £877 11/2. Abattoirs report: Stock slaughtered in March: 27 cows, 30 heifers, 77 bullocks, 448 sheep, 163 lambs, 11 pigs, 9 calves. Condemned nil. Fees collected for March amounted to £9B/13/6 compared with £96/2/- for the corresponding period last year.—Approved. Health Inspector’s report: Inspection of houses seven, food sellers’ premises six; plumbing apd drainage 36, various 16. Requisitions: Houses 4; food sellers’ premises I.—Approved. It was reported that 141 dogs had been registered this year, against 86 last year, an increase of 55. Cr. Turner drew attention to the damage done by wandering cattle. He suggested that action be taken to have the nuisance stopped.—lt was decided to write to the pound-keeper drawing his attention to the complaints.

Cr. Stopforth’s action in authorising the cleaning of the cycling track on Cass Square, was approved. The New Zealand Refrigerating Co. Ltd. advised that eight sheep were delivered into the Hokitika abattoir area during March, 1939. The Municipal Association of New Zealand advised that it had been suggested that it is the intention to take the control of the licensing of taxis and town carriers out of the hands of local bodies, and asked whether the Council has any by-laws dealing with control and licensing.—lt was decided to advise the Association that the Council had by-laws -covering the situation.

Miss F. A. Thompson’s application for permission to instal septic tank was granted subject fo Health Regulations. The Canterbury Education Board’s application for permission to instal a septic tank' at 1 the new infant school in Sale Street was granted subject to the Health Regulations. , The Hokitika School ' Committee wrote asking the Council to have footpaths formed and gravelled along the frontage of the new infant school and to instal a street crossing in Sale Street. —Agreed. The Controller and Auditor-General wrote I pointing out that money received from the sale of reserves must be applied towards the purchase of other lands for the same purposes, as affected the lands disposed of. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote asking for what amoiinT the Council will sell Lots 678, D,P. 391 of Municipal Reserve 584, Livingstone and Hoffman Streets, provided that his Department can successfully negotiate with the Lessee as regards his leasehold interest in the land.—Referred to a sub-committee. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote asking what amount the Council would be prepared t oaccept for Municipal Reserye No. 534, Weld Street, in event of the Department successfully negotiating with the lessee in regard to his interest in the property, and also that the form of option be completed by the Council. Referred to a sub-committee. The Commissioner of Crown Lands asking for what amount the Council would sell Lots 32—36 on D.P. 737 Municipal Reserve 492 (Whitecombe Square) and asking that .the option be completed by the Council.—Referred to sub-committee. The Minister of Mines advised in regard to the Railway level crossings, Tudor and Park Streets, that the Public Works Department are unable to assist with the cost of the proposals, and suggested that revision of the. cost should be considered by the Hokitika Borough Council and the Railways Department. ' . The Hokitika Beautifying Society wrote expressing disappointment at the delay in carrying out the work suggested by the Society in Sale Street. Mr. M. E. Spiers wrote applying for a domestic water service connection to his premises in Weld Street, and also asking if it would be possible for him to connect with the Borough sewerage system as he intends to build at the back of the existing premises.—Referred to the foreman to report. Mr. C. H. Morrison as agent tor owner, application for consent to plan of the subdivision of Section 778 into Lot 1 (30 perches) and Lot 2 (10 perches) was approved. Mrs. H. G. F. Coles’s application for curbing to protect a fence was granted, the applicant to pay' half cost. Mrs. N. S. Wilson’s application tor piping of a section of drain in Weld Street, was referred to the Works Committee to report. . February 17 to February 24, 1940 was fixed as the period for the Hokitika celebration of the Centennial.
