RUNANGA ■■ TOURNAMENT. .The Kunaiiga Boxing Association field an open an d novice tournament ■in the Miners’ Hall last evening, and there, was- a large attendance. The Association, has only recently been formed, the bouts being the first effort and' judging by the keen interest Taken', both by young boxers and the ■public,;- the prospects are bright, for a revival' 'of the sport in Runanga. Mr. R. McTaggart, President of the Association, in a brief address, recommended the youth of the * town to take up boxing, and asked the support of the public in fostering the sport. ' There .were seventeen. bouts during the evening, mostly in the lighter weights, and apart from a number of last-minute withdrawals, which caused delay, the programme--was run -through expeditiously.' The officials were: Referees: Messrs F. ...O’Neill, J. . Garvey, and A. Harrison. Announcer, Mr. A. Williams; timekeepers: Messrs J. A. McLeod and T. King; seconds: Messrs C. Crowe and J. Masters; glove stewards: Messrs A. Campbell and Jim Garvey; call stewards: Messrs F. Heslin and L. Hunter; secretary, Mr. L. Grogan. Messrs F. W. Baillie, M. McDonald, and W. Gieseking, members of the Greymouth Boxing Association assisted the local officials, and the Chairman thanked them on behalf of the Club. .The outstanding bout of the evening was between Anderson and Nelson, Bst. 131 b and 9st. libs., respectively. The three one-minute rounds were hard fought from gong to gong. Nelson secured the.. decision, but there was some opposition, the boys being evenly matched... . The results of the bouts were as follow:—IL- Masters, sst. defeated Davis. Porter, 4.1, defeated Findley,
4.2,Hambleton; 7,3. defeated Smith, 7.7. Hambleton was. definitely superior, and the bout was decided in the first round. Armstrong 10.1, defeated Bell, 10.1. K. Forrest; 7st. defeated Silcock, 6.8. C. Shackley, 6.12. defeated Kiely, 6.13. Meates, 6.2, defeated Woodhouse, 6st. Hopkins. 9.8. defeated Smith, 9st. Hopkins showed promise as a boxer, this being only his second fight. The bout went to the second round, when Smith was twice floored after some keen fighting. Meates, 8.6, defeated O’Gonneil, 8.8. Meates, who was a more finished boxer, soon had the measure of his opponent and the bout was decided in the second round. Nelson, 7.1, defeated Anderson, 8.13, in the best bout of the evening. In the '.semi-final, C. Shackley. 6.12. defeated R. Armstrong, 7.3. Armstrong was unable to continue after the first round'. J. Bbddy,' sstl was too good for J. Masters;-sst; in the final of the sst. division. The bout concluded in the'second round.- B.Steel, 5.8 defeated A. Hopkins, • a.S.' J. Martini. 6.7, defeated P. Meates, 6.2. in a willing bout, the final of the 6-7 stone division. Porter 4.1, and Morgan, 4.4
fought a draw. ■ G. Davison. 4.13, defeated R. Fraser sst. at the end of the first round. J. Forrest, 9st. defeated R. Braithwaite 9/3. 'Forrest was the more experienced boxer. In the final of "st. division C. Sha'ckley (3.12 defeated R. Forrest, 7st. Shackley, in his three bouts during the evening, fought vigorously, and was fighting well at the finish.
