Compared with the closing vales before the Easter recess, best wools ruled about par, while average to inferior sorts were 5 per cent, low'er There was good competition mainly from Yorkshire, the Continent, and Japan. Reference to the Australian project to produce motor-spirit, from shale, in which he is interested, was made by Mr. C. F. Davis, head of the Davis Gelatine Company of Australia, on his arrival by the Awatea from Sydney, to-day. * Mr. Davis said the project was to be developed at Newnes, which was in the Blue Mountains and about 150 miles out of Sydney. Very big deposits of shale existed there, and they were to be worked by his company assisted by the State and Federal Goverriments. The prospects for the new undertaking were good, added Mr. Davis. He thought they should be producing 35,000 gallons of motor spirit a day by early next year. The necessary plant was now under construction.

MINING. KANIERI. During the first -hnlf of April, the Kanieri dredge worked- 223 hours, and treated 96,000 cubic yards, for a return of 515 ounces of gold. BARRYTOWN. During the first half of April, the Barrytown dredge worked 213 hours, and treated 96,000 cubic yards, for a return of 346 ounces of gold. CLUTHA For the week ended Friday last, the Clutha. dredge working at Alexandra recovered 110 ounces in 100 hours.
