AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS j PULLAR DEFEATS BOOT. I FEU ASSOCIATION. 1 HASTINGS, March 10. The weather was overcast, but fine for the opening of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Championships, at McLean Park, Napier, this afternoon. A fall of rain in the early morning made the track a trifle slow, but gejierally conditions were good. Eleven events. including live finals drew large crowds. Chief interest of the day was in the mile race, when V. P. Boot (Canterbury) met W. A. Pullar (Wellington). Pißlar finished one second ahead of Boot, in linin 20se.c. Previously bettered by both men tfie lime was four seconds better than the New Zealand standard time, and a record for I lie track.

After the gun in the mile, Dare (Auckland) took the lead early, closely followed by S. .1. Wade. They maintained the lead to the three-quar-ter mile, when Pullar, who was some distance hack, began to crack on the tape. It appeared that Boot misThe crowd was wildly excited as they cleared the field and raced for the tape. It apepared that Boot misjudged the final spurt or else Pullar had an extra trifle of speed, when the Wellington man staved off a challenge to win in one of the most spectacular finishes seen on the ground. The three miles walk resolved itself into a battle between Kingston (Poverty Bay-Hawke’s Bay), and It. L Watson (Otago). They went into the lead in the turn, leaving the other competitors strung out along the track. In the final lap Watson drew ahead to F. S. Barraclough retained the pole vault title by a narrow margin when Grey (Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay), after equalising the former’s vault, failed on the count back. 11. W. Wilkins won the long jump in comfortable style with more than a foot to spare over the second man, E. Phillips (Wellington). In the discus throw, J. Morgan (West Coast, North Island), and J. Dalgleish (Otago) were well ahead of the third man, but a perfect throw by Morgan to 129 ft 4in, put the issue beyond doubt. FATE OE REMITS. NAPIER, March 10. A protest by the secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association (Mr. IT. McCormick) against a suggestion that the council had refuted remits from the annual conference of centre delegates, marked a discussion at the conference last night of a proposal to abandon the conference in favour of the attendance of delegates at the annual meeting of the association with full voting power. I Mr. A. Benson (West Coast, North' Island) contended it was a waste of time attending the conference, as, in most cases, the remits were ignored bv the association. |

Mr. McCormick denied that the as- ( sociation took no notice of the remits;SO per cent, of the remits from the past three conferences had been adopted. • [ protest against the suggestion that the council flouts the remits or does not fully consider them,” Mr. McCormick said. i The motion was carried. | By a margin of one vote, the con*! fcrence rejected a remit from the Otago Centre seeking the inclusion of, a six-mile event in the programme for. national meetings.

'Phe conference also carried a motion, that it considered it detrimental for school boys to over indulge in competitions at school atheltic gatherings.

It was decided to recommend to the parent body that the presidency be hold by the centre conducting the national championships.
