They demons! rated their poweis by running an electric motor, ligliling electric bulbs, and pr ulu.ing sounds from a loudspeaker. It was believed to be the first, demonstration of ti. motor on; by eel power. Mr Christopher Coates, an official of the New York aquarium, lilted an eel uom the tank and fastened two flexible metal bands round its body. From these wires ran to a battery of neon lamps, and when Mr Coates tickled the- eel it relemmd an electric discharge which caused the bulbs to flash repeatedly. Turning another switch the demonstrator then connected the eel to loudspeakers, causing a scries of loud bangs, finally he connected the eel to a, small electric motor and the enraptured audience saw the flywheel spinning smartly round. As a climax Mr Coates closed all the switches and then, tickling the cel with both hands, caused it to operate all the contrivances simultaneously.
