G.B.S. “INSULTED”

AWARD TO “PYGMALION.” Mr. George Bernard Shaw is incensed because the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences. Hollywood, has named his work, “Pygmalion,” as the best-written screen play of 1938. “It is perfect nonsense.” Mr. Shaw said. “My position as a playwright is known all over the world. 1 do not need an American to tell me that ‘Pygmalion’ is a good play. It is an insult to offer me an award of this sort, as if they had never heard of me before —it is very likely that they never had. “It is an admirable film, but personally I regard the award as to the producer and the actors, rather than as a tribute to me as author.” Asked if he would go to the United States to receive the award. Mr. Shaw said, “Certainly not!” Told that he might be given one of the famed statuettes, he said: “That’s different. If it’s real gold they can send it to me and 1 can pawn it.”
