MISS NORMAN EQUALS RECORD. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION’.] AUCKLAND, March 10. The world’s record for the 100 yards ladies’ sprint of 11 seconds, was equalled at Sturge’s Park, Otahuhu, tonight, by the West Australian athlete, Miss Decima Norman, the holder of several records established at the British Empire Games. According to statements by the officials of the Auckland Centre, however, the record will not be recognised, as the time was registered with the advantage of a following wind. Miss Norman was also a member of a relay team which covered a 440yds. course in 50secs., this time being oneflftli of a second outside of the world’s record, and equalling the existing New Zealand record.

BOOKS AS TROPHIES Under the constitution of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, an amateur must not compete for any prize or token which cannot be suitably inscribed with some words or letters commemorative of the competition. and prizes must not be of a character which cannot be possessed or retained for the period of the life of the recipient. The question was asked by the Auckland Centre, at a meeting of the N.Z.A.A.A. council, whether the purchase of books with an open trophy order would conform to this rule. The secretary stated that he had had the books of the council perused, and no record had been found of a previous decision on the question. Mr. J. A. Gasson said he remembered that when he was In Christchurch, the point had been determined, the ruling being that a competitor was in order in purchasing books. It was pointed out that the first requirement was not that the article should be engravable but that it should be inscribable, and, moreover, that schools made a practice of giving books , as sports prizes.
