MR. SAVAGE’S IDEALS
“SOMETH ING ATTEMFTED ’ ’ [l’Ei; PKESS ASSOCIATION. | WELLINGTON March 9. “Our job is to give everyone a chance in whatever sphere he is interested and if a nation gives the individual opportunity that nation will be greater as a result of it” declared the Prime Minister (Mr. Savage) addressing factory employees during a tour of Wellington factories this morning. He said he wished to see New Zealanders occupying positions in every walk of life and to see them getting more as a result of their labour.
“We want to be in a position to stand on our feet." he said, "because we never know when we may be compelled to do it. We do not. want to be a nation of leaners. We want to encourage a spirit of independence and initiative.”
Mr. Savage said they were engaged in “a pretty big work.” They had certain ideals. “You are not supposed to have ideals, according to some people." he added. “You are supposed tn have what is called a practical outlook. I would sooner have some ideals and Ir e to work out plant, to realire them, than go down to the gfa*. e as. a great statesman who has done nothing.”
