TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. March 11 —Taranaki. March 10, 11—Cromwell. March 11 —Carterton. March 17, IS— Wellington. March 17, 18—Ohinemuri. March 18—Waimate. March 23, 25—Oamaru. March 24, 25 —Manawatu. March 25 —Birchwood Hunt. March 25, 27 —Bay of Plenty. March 30, April I—Hawke’s Bay. Auckland Betting: The committee of the Auckland Racing Club has decided to use the win and place systems’ of betting, at its Easter meeting, which tak‘os place at Ellerslie, on April £■ and 10. McHeath and Pink Robe: McHeath, who has a couple ot hurdle races to his credit, is to be raced in steeplechases this Winter, and Mr. A. Ferguson has decided to try Pink Robe over hurdles. Kathbella: The Napier Park sprint winner, Kathbella has started 17 times to date, for four wins, four seconds and three thirds, and £BlO in stakes.

High Caste: The Bulandshar colt, High Caste, who cost 7,000 guineas, has now won for his new owners a little under £3OOO. He looks certain to return at least his purchase price before he needs a spell. Phalanx: The Nightmarch—Wing-a-Peep fiveyear old gelding, Phalanx, who has tvon one race this season, vzill be trained by T. G. Pollock, who won many laces with Palermo. Phalanx has raced consistently, but has not had the best of luck in his races. An Early Winner: The rider of Dainty Sue, an Aus-tralian-bred mare by Drake, was content to wait on her field in the Rangitikei Cup on Saturday, and he then found the leeway just too much to make up in the run home. Better placed on the turn, the mare would have troubled Peerless. Melbourne Sales: At the yearling sales at Melbourne yesterday, Mr. W. R. Kemball purchased a Lord Paramount—Rosa/mond’s March colt for 425 guineas. Mr. P. Quinlan bought a Manitoba — Yaree filly for 450 guineas.

Improved Hack: No hack in the North Island has made greater improvement in the past few months than the Bulls owned and trained gelding Mataroa, and he will now have to be considered at Trentham, next week, when he claims an engagement in the Champion Hack Cup. Mataroa has had four wins, a second and a third in his last six starts. Promising Youngster:

A novice who has shown some pace is the Vaals filly Miss Valerie, who, ■despite the fact that she has not been up long, has been seen to advantage on the tracks at Takanini. Miss Valeri,., has yet to face the starter, but she shows promise of- being a useful filly when she has gained experience.

Record by Peerless: The old-standing record of Marguerite, established in 1907, went 'by the board when Peerless won the Rangitikei Cup on Saturday, in 2.6, the Trentham filly clipping the odd fractions off the record. Though Peerless was the public choice on the totalisator, the stable thought that Galteemore would go the better race, but Peerless’s class told above Galt’eemore’s hard condition.

Manawatu Classic: After first forfeit, the following two-year-olds remain in the thirty-first Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, to be run over seven furlongs at Manawatu on March 25: —La Bru, Prudent Prince, Newbury Queen, Submission, Caution, Vascones, Silver Stick, Beaulivre, Millament, Varimond, Nora Gregor, Counter, Serenata, Fils de Vaals, Beau Vite, Gayest Son, Baron. Ruling Star: Ruling Star, winner of the Trial Plate at Bulls on Saturday last, is a four-year-old gelding by Chief Ruler from Phrosa, owned by Mr. G. F. Moore. He was trained for a while last season at Riccarton, but did not shape too well 'and Saturday’s was his first success. He has been running on in his recent races, and may develop useful form over a middle distance. Drachma: Drachma, one of T. R. George s four winners at the Rangitikei meeting, has proved to be a good bargain for Mr. P. J. Curtis, of Christchurch, who purchased him ’at Trentham in January for 110 guineas. On the following day he-ran second in the Trial Plate at the' Wellington Racing Club’s Summer meeting. Two days later he won the concluding event of the meeting. These two outings were worth £2< I) to Mr. Curtis, and Saturday’s win brought this total to £3BO. Drachma is a three-year-old gelding by Iliad from Countersign by Paper Money from Kilberry.

NOTES FROM RICCARTON TRENTHAM CANDIDATES [special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, March 9. A steady drizzle of rain did not interfere with track work at Riccarton to-day. All galloping was done on the inside grass tracks. The rainfall yesterday, and last night, was welcomed by all trainers, and it will now be possible to us ethe grass tracks instead of the plough. All horses booked to race at Trentham next week, were worked. Counterblast ran half a mile home in 49. Lady Leigh galloped the same distance along the back in 48?*=. Royal Chief gave Settlement three lengths lead in starting a seven-fur-longs gallop, and they finished together in 1/29 3-5, the former’s best half taking 52. Great Flight, and Wild Talk covered the same ground in 1.29, the last four in 52. Prudent Prince broke away in front of Moorsotis at the start of a half mile I sprint, but the latter finished a length in front in 49 2-5. Royal Huntress took 51 for the same distance.

i Argentic and Haughty Winner galloped six furlongs in 1.163, the last, four in 51. Improvident followed in 1.17 3-5. She looks to have bright prospects in the Railway Handicap at Trentham, with the minimum impost. Spartan covered seven furlongs in ■1.34. Capricious, joined by Nightdress at the seven furlongs galloped a mile and a-quarter in 2.14. She is to contest the St. Leger at Trentham, and will be ridden by C. Wilson. Royal Chief is a likely starter in the Thompson Handicap, and B. H. Morris will probably ride him. CROMWELL J.C. TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME. Trotting MEETINGS TO COME

March 11—Timaru. March 11—Thames. ' March 18— Wyndham, March 18—Cheviot. March 18— Wanganui. March 25— Wanganui. March 25 —Westland. April I—Taranaki. April I—Ashburton. April 8, 10—Hawera. Reminder: n . Nominations for the Westland Trotting Club’s meeting will close next Tuesday at 9 p.m. Double-gaited: , Agnes Bingen, hailed as the fastest ‘maiden pacer to be trained at Epsom for many years, has been entered ior the novice trotting race as well as the pacing event at Thames.

.War Buoy Retired?: The lease held by M. B. Edwards over War Buoy, has expired, and the pacer has been returned to his owner. 'An exchange states that it is probable he will not be asked to race again. He has been troubled with unsoundness for some time.

.Champion Stakes: One hundred and forty entries have been received for the New Zealand Champion Stakes, of £750, for three-year-olds, to be run over a distance of one mile and a-half, at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s summer meeting in 1940.

Revision: After a spell extending over several months, S. A. Edwards has recommissioned the three-year-old pacer Revision, and she appears to be vastly improved by her holiday. Early in the season this juvenile gave promise of developing into a useful winner, and she should prove a good performer in time, being a speedy pacer with plenty of stamina. Timaru Entrant:

An interesting acceptor for the Timaru meeting is Ferry Post, a pacer who made a rapid rise to good company earlier in the season. He has not been asked to race in the past few months hut he has proved his ability over all distances and is regarded as one likely to reach New Zealand Cup company with time.

Our War: Our War, now trained by L. O. Thomas, at Addington, has made many friends for early engagements (he is engaged at Timaru) since he has been working at headquarters. In a recent trial, he stepped 4.33 for two miles, including the last half in 1.5, and travelled two sulkies out from the rails most of the way. Last season, OutWar won three races, and this season he has been in the money on six occasions.

Novices by Kohara: F. Holmes is handling two novice pacers by Kohara, a winner of the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, New Zealand Derby, and the New Zealand Cup, from Calm Girl and Rhine. Both are four-year-old mares. Neither has been in work long, but eacli paces nicely and may be seen in a favourable light later in the season. The mare from Rhine has been named Ngairita, and she will probably make her appearance at the approaching Cheviot, fixture.
