GROCERS’ CONFERENCE. TIMARU, February 6

Forty-five delegates are attending the sixteenth conference of the New Zealand Master Grocers’ Federation, which opened at Caroline Bay this afternoon, Mr M. J. Campbell presiding. The delegates were welcomed' by the Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy), and other speakers were Messrs Carr, M.P., E. Darroch (President of the Chamber of Commerce) and C. D. Gibson (South Canterbury Grocers’ Association). The conference will conclude on Friday, and in the interim, the annual report will be presented, officers elected; papers read, and 2G remits dealt with.

DIVINITY DEGREES

CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 6

The University Senate decided, today to approach the Minister of Education for power to confei’ degrees of theology. The suggestion made that the churches organise a Board of Studies, and secure a Parliamentary charter enabling the Board to confer degrees, was not acceptable to any of the churches concerned, stated a menwrandufn submitted by the Church representatives. The memorandum proposed that degrees should be available only to those who were already graduates of the University of New Zealand, or some other approved university. The Senate, to-day, agreed to recognise Doctor V. E. Galway, of Dunedin, who is to be appointed to the Chair of Music at Otago University, as a Professor of the University of New Zealand. GAMBLING FINES. WEDDINGTON, February G. Four Chinese 1 and five Europeans, arrested. during gaining raids on Saturday evening, appeared at the Magistrate’s Court, to-day. Ah Wong, 54, gardener, pleaded guilty to using premises in Vivian Street, of which he was the; occupier, as a common gaining house'. He was fined £3O.
