MAGISTRATE’S COURT

TO-DAY’S GREYMOUTH CASES. Mr. Raymond Ferner, S.M., presided over to-day’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, Greymouih. Sergeant A. H. Barnes represented the police. A statutory first, offender, found on licensed premises after hours, was lined 5/-, with costs. For a. breach of his prohibition order, John Joseph O’Donnell was lined £l/10/-, with costs. An offender, arrested for drunkenness, was fined 5/-. For casting offensive matter on the street, he was fined £l.

Raymond Stanley Fields was lined 10/-, with costs, for failing to carrv a, warrant of fitness on a motor-cycle. That he was in a hurry to reach Greymouth on January 2, in order to have a bet on the first race, was the excuse given to Traffic Inspector I. W. Ro worth, by Oswald Henry Purvis, who pleaded guilty to exceeding the speed limit of 30 miles per hour. Inspector Roworth said that he followed defendant from the Stillwater railway station, and checked the speed of his car as 40 miles per hour. Defendant gave the excuse indicated.

Defendant said that he passed Stillwater station at about 30 miles per hour, and was still doing the same speed when he passed the hotel. On going down the hill, he “let her ride,” and the speed went, up to 40 mile-, per hour. There were no interse - tions, and the road was clear. He did not think he was doing any harm. The S.M. fined defendant £l. with costs.

An. information for disobedience of a. maintenance order against August Stade (Mr. J. W. Hannan I was dismissed. The order was made on February 10, 1908. for the payment, of 10/- per week to defendants wife, Jean Stade, and the arrears amounted to £2B. August. Stade applied for a, variation of lhe order, on the ground that he was unable to continue working, owing to ill-health. The S.M. cancelled the order as from February 4, and remitted the whole of the arrears. Dulcie Norris Smith applied for an increase in the amount of £2/5/- per week, under a maintenance order made at Christchurch, in May, 1932 against her husband, Clarence Ludstone Smith. The amount was originally £l/15/- per week, but it was subsequently increased to £2/2/6 anil to £2/5/-. Evidence was given by both parties. After perusing documents produced by Smith, the S.M advised Mrs. Smith, who is; now residing at Runanga. to cease the “persecution” of her husband, ff she came before the Court at Greymouth, with further similar proceedings, he would make an order against her for costs.
