TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. February 9. 11— Dunedin. February 9, 11— Egmont. February 9, 11—Poverty Bay. February 11, 13. —Rotorua. February 17, IS.—Winton. February 17, IS.—Woodville. February 18—Tolaga Bay. February 18, 20—Waikato. February 23, 25.— Wangabui. February 24, 25. —Gore. February 25. —Waiapu. February 25, 27. —Westland. February 25, 27. —Te Aroha. Hokitika Nominations: Nominations for the Hokitika races on February 25 and 27 close with the Secretary at 5.30 o'clock on Monday evening. Royal Star II: Royal Star If, ■who broke down badly on the eve of the last Wellington meeting, was sent from Trentham to Christchurch, this week, for veterinary treatment.

Spelled: Punarua (Pombal-Joanfax) who disappointed at the recent Wellington meting, has been turned out for a spell.

Custos 2 At. Elswick, Tasmania, on January 21, the winners included the New Zea-land-bred Custos, by Lord WardenMata ta. Wardress: Wardress has been treated to a spell following a strenuous campaign over the holiday season, and will make her reappearance at the Banks Peninsula meeting next month. Spear Thrust: The Irish Lancer gelding Spear Thrust stands 17 hands or more,, and is one of the biggest horses in. training. He stands high for a three-year-old, and should prove a winner if nis’ legs can carry his top-piece.

Beaulivre:

Beaulivre was not too lively for a few days after hisi heroic victory conceding a couple of stone and more all round at the recent Wellington meeting, but he has since regained all his energy, and he will probably race next .in the Challenge Stakes at Ellerslie.

Silver Sight Back: Silver Sight is again a regular track attendant. It was decided a few months back, to retire him from racing, as he had reached the stage as a hurdler when he was 1 being asked to carry heavy burdens. He did so well in the p addock, however, and was thoroughly * sound in wind and limb, his owners thought fit to put him into training again with a view to confining his future energies to steeplechasing.

Re-appearance: Pink Bond (Pink Coat —Victory Bond) is to reappear at Tapanui after an absence of more than 12 months. Pink Bond’s only success to date was in the Dominion Handicap, at Wingatui, as a two-year-old last season, when her time of 48 4-ssec for the four furlongs represented a track record. This filly has furnished into a good type of three-year-old, and in her track work she has shown that that has lost none of her brilliance. Among the field in the race she 1 won were: Toro Koura (fourth). Compensate (second), Ortyx (third), On Call and Dunstan. New Owner: The yearling colt, by Lord Quex from Seamstress, bought for 200 guineas at the Trentham sales last month by Miss P. Hartland, of Christchurch, for Mr F. R. Meehan, of Timaru, is being handled by F. Christmas, who will train him for his new: owner. Seamstress is by Catmint from Slinstitch, and .is a half-sister to Black Thread, Summerhill, Threadneedle (sire of winners in the Gisborne district), and Drop" One (dam of Malagigi). It is not intended to race the colt until late in the >new season.

White Forehead: Following closely on the first successes of the stock of Croupier, Ollatrim, and Rowley at Pahiatua on Saturday was the win of Bronwien, the first of the- Cambria Parks to score, at Ellerslie on Monday last. Bronwen is a four-year-old brown mare, and her name incidentally is Welsh for “white forehead.’’ hence it may be assumed that she is so marked. Her sire, Cambria Park, a 1930 Kilbroney horse who did not race, was bred by Mr E. A. Price at the Cambria Park Stud, Papatoetoe, and he belongs to the. Lyra, family, which has produced such horses at Gorton (a successful sire), Te Monanui (also making good as a sire), Renown, Peter Maxwell, Paonui, and Scratchmere Scar. Bronwen was also bred by Mr Price, her dam being the LucullusI—Recoup 1 —Recoup mare Recipio. a full-sister to Missgold (dam of Ben Hur) and a half-sister to Llanberis (dam of Kilberis and Llangollen), hence she has a. stout distaff line. She is being raced by Mr C. W. Jackson, of Papakura, who exercised an option of sale over her last August, and she is a member of P. E. Pope’s team at Takanini. Plans for Ajax:

Ajax, Australia’s champion' racehorse, against whom the New Zealand crack three-year-old Defaulter will probably race in April, is moving along satisfactorily in his preparation for autumn racing. “Ajax may begin his campaign with weight-for-age races at Moonee Valley and Williamstown,” Mr A. W. Thompson, partowner, recently told a Victorian Pressman. “Future plans will depend on his form in those races. He will possibly be nominated for the Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket, but there is no certainty that he will run in either.” Ajax Avon last year’s Newmarket with the record weight, for a three-year-old of 9.0, but he has not since started in a. handicap. “We are in a. dilemma about entering him for handicaps, because as soon as his name appears people contract betting obligations on -him. If he is with drawn they lose, and the other owner and myself* are blamed. We like to enter him for the big handicaps to note what weight he is allotted, but we’ do not. like to court unfair criticism.” Ajax, who has not raced since the final day of the Melbourne Cup meeting early in November, will be a colourful horse again in the autumn, and the course able to feature his reappearance will be lucky. The champion’s stake earnings when he concluded the spring season, totalled

£24,475. With luck he should win another £BOOO or £9OOO in Sydney and Melbourne this year. DUNEDIN J.C. FIELDS FOR THURSDAY. DUNEDIN, February 3.
