EWE pair. [JPIB PBKSB ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, January 20. The opening of the first ewe fair of the 1939 season, at Waipukurau, was without any surprises. Prices were down on the opening sales of last season. Two-tooths showed a depreciation of 8/- to 10/- a head and five-year-old ewes showed a drop of 5/- to 7/6. The top price of the day was 25/3 for two-tooths and 18/2, for fiveyear ewes. A yarding of more than 11,000 came forward, and in most cases vendors were prepared ' to meet the market. Quality was mixed with good 'two, four, and six-tooths predominating. Tops in two-tooths ranged from 22/6 to 25/-, medium from 20/- to 22/-, and late shorn and small from 17/6. Fourtooths made 21/- toi 24/-. Four and five-year ewes realised 18/6 to 20/2 for tops, others ranging from 14/- to 17/7, and small types from 12/-. The best price that could be obtained for six-'year lines was 14/-, with medium ranging from 10/1 and poorly mouthed sorts down to 9/-.
