WILDING SHIELD. WON BY CANTERBURY. AUCKLAND, January 20. The Canterbury lawn tennis team succeeded in its challenge to Auckland for the Wilding Shield, winning seven matches to Auckland’s five. Canterbury had established a firm lead on the first day by winning three singles and two doubles matches against the loss of one singles match. To-day was a day of surprises and incidents. The Auckland players staged a great recovery by winning three of the singles matches, which brought the score to 5-4 in favour of the challenging team. At this stage there was an unusual happening. A. D. Brown, of Canterbury, who was leading 6-4 and 4-2 against J. T. Mayson, of Auckland, slipped on the baseline and dislocated his shoulder. This caused an adjournment. of more than an hour, when Brown returned and finished the match by winning in straight sets.

C. Angas, captain of the Canterbury team, suffered' his first defeat in Wilding Shield matches when he lost to J. TV. Gunn, of Auckland, in three even sets. Angas played a gallant uphill contest and went down with distinction as one of the finest players ever to take part in this event. With matches at 6-4 in favour of Canterbury, the result was dependent upon two doubles events. When Angas and Pattinson won their match against Gunn and Bedford the result was beyond doubt, and with Brown playing under difficulties on the adjoining court the Canterbury pair defaulted. Results were: —

Singles

N. F. Bedford (Auckland) beat R. G. Pattinson (Canterbury), 6-3. 6-1. N. fl. Sturt (Auckland) beat. A. R. Cant (Canterbury), 7-5, 7-5. J. W" Gunn (Auckland.) beat C. Angas (Canterbury), 6-3, 4-6. 6-4. A. D. Brown (Canterbury) beat J. T. Mayson (Auckland), 6-4, 8-6. Doubles C. Angas and R. G. Pattinson (Canterbury) beat J. TV. Gunn and N. F. Bedford (Auckland) 6-3. 1-6, 6-2. N. G. Sturt and J. T. Mayson (Auckland) beat A. D. Brown and A. R. Cant (Canterbury) 6-2, Brown and Cant then defaulting.

UMPIRE’S ERRORS

AUCKLAND. January 20. The sporting action of the referee for the Wilding Shield competition between Canterbury and Auckland, Mr S. Lamb, president of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, and Norman Sturt, captain of the Auckland team, in agreeing to Brown continuing his singles match against Mayson at such a critical stage was greatly appreciated by the Canterbury manager and members of the team. It may have meant the difference between retaining and losing the trophy. Because the matches were played on off days. considerable difficulty was experienced in obtaining linesmen. and in their absence the responsibilities of umpires were greatly increased. Tin? latter made several errors at vital stages of the com-

petition, and this afternoon several spectators voiced disapproval at the rulings of the officials controlling the various matches. The players were obviously upset on occasions.

JI INIOR CHAM PIONS 111 PS. WANGANUI. January 20. With only a slight breeze better conditions prevailed for the third day of Hie junior tennis championships. The hoys’ singles contest was brought to a final, which will be played tomorrow by A. Burns (Auckland), and X. McKenzie (Wellington). The quar-ter-finals and one semi-final were played in the girls’ championships, the scmi-tinalist winner being the Canterbury girl. Miss D. Elsom. In the oilier girls’ semi-final. Miss B. Potter (Auckland) will meet Miss J. Wallace (Auckland),
