BOWLING TOURNAMENT

FINAL OF PAIRS. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND. January 20. The great interest taken in the New Zealand Bowling Association’s championships was shown at Carlton green to-day, when more Ilian 1000 spectators, many of whom were accommodated on a special stand, borrowed from the Auckland Tennis Association, xvaited until after G o’clock to see the closing stages of the competitions. Pine weather and the absence of wind were conducive to good bowling, and added greatly to the enjoyment of the spectators. The final of the pairs event was decided to-day. J. S. Anchor and W. Robinson (Hamilton) beating L. Balfour and I. Stephenson (Gisborne) by 25 points to IG. The contest was close up to the sixteenth head, but after that the Hamilton team asserted itself and moved to an easy victory.

A great struggle was seen in the seventh round game in the singles between W. Cranks (Balmoral) ami J. S. Marlin (Ellerslie), and both were frequently applauded for shots of outstanding excellence. There was little io choose between the players tip to Hie twentieth head, where Eranks secured an advantage and won by a I wo-point margin. In the semi-linal A. (’onnew (Mount .Albert) secured a runaway victory over 11. Cowjier (. Ponsonby >. Franks ami (’onnew, both one-lifers, will meet in Hie final to-morrow.
