HOKITIKA, January 17

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The ■ Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. J. L. Turner, A. R. Elcock, C. Caliari, J. Fox. F. de Freitas, W. H. Stopforth, and D. P. Stuart. Apologies were received for absence from Crs. G. Heinz and H. T. Parry. The financial statement showed receipts £677/8/6, expenditure £llB3 9/10. Accounts amounting to £1471 1/9 were passed for payment. A deputation from the Hokitika Beautifying Asociation consisting of Messrs Green, Fredricks and Stapleton; waited on the Council, asking that the Council carry out its palrt of the cleaning up of Sale Street. —The Mayor stated that the incessant wet weather had hampered the borough work considerably, hut the scheme would be proceeded with as soon as possible.

Crs. de Freitas and Stuart were appointed the Council’s representatives to co-operate with the Businessmen’s Association and other bodies to go into tho matter of the provision on Cass Square of conveniences for women and children.

It was resolved to ask the chairmen of all committees to hold meetings and report to the next meeting of the Council.

Abattoirs’ report: Stock slaughtered for month of December amounted to 19 cows, 24 heifers, 66 bullocks, 360 sheep, 253 lambs, 14 pig's, 3 calves condemned nil. Fees collected for the month of December amounted to £B9 .10/-; fees for the corresponding month last year £B9/1/-. Cz. Fox, chairman of the Abattoirs Committee, reported on the condtion of the slaughterman's house.—Repairs to the amount of £35 were approved. Cr. D. Stuart was appointed to the Rates and By-laws Committee and Waterworks Commitee, also to the Public Works Committee. If. was decided that the Council draw tho alention of the Post and Telegra.,ih Department to the necessity for tho construction of the new Post Office.

From Grey Waitersiders, application for use of Cass Square on February 11, for annual picnic.—-Approved'. From N.Z. Refrigerating Co., advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of December, viz.: 65 sheep, 24 lambs, 1 pig. From T. A. Keown, Sale Street, application for permission to. instal a septic tank at residence in Sale Street. —Granted, subject to Health regulations.

From Henry Jones, application for permission to instal septic tank on Sections 1459 and 1466, corner of Revell and Hampden Streets. —Granted, subject to Health regulations. From Martha Moore, application for permission to install septic tank on Section 193, occupied by R. Hannah and Co., Revell Street-Granted, subject to Health regulations.

From Public Works Department application to instal septic tank on Section 843, Sale Street (residence of 'custodian Government Buildings).— Granted, subject to Health regulations.

From W. H. Nicol, application to instal septic tank on Section palrt 264, Weld Street.—Granted, subject to Health regulations.

From the Hokitika Businessmen’s Association, suggesting the numbering of houses in the borough.—Held’ over for further consideration., (b) Advising that the. Asociation is working to provide substantial conveniences for women and children in Cass Square and requesting the Council’s permission to proceed with the work and a grant-in-aid of the funds and also than a committee of sports bodies is being formed in connection with the matter and asking the Council to appoint two representatives to that committee.—Suggestion approved, (c) Asking the Council to extend Fitzherbert Street footpath ais far as the north Town Belt to co-operate with the Main Highways Board in the formation of a footpath for pedestrialns- to the gates of the Westland Hospital.— Referred to Works Committee to report.

From Mr A. J. Ileveldt, North Revell Street, application for an extraordinary water service connection to non-ratcable section on the west side of Revell Street.—Approved, the usual charges to be made. From A. H. Appleton, Hampden Street, asking that the drtf.in outside his property be attended to as the water cannot get away and is coming on to his property.—Referred to the Works Committee.

From C. W. Barrowman, drawing attention to the condition of North ale Street, and asking that the con-

dition of the street be improved and also that the footpath on the west side of Sale Street be extended to his residence. Referred to the Works’ Committee.

From Rev. Mother, Convent, Hokitika, stating that the grass outside the Convent in Sewell Street had been ent by voluntary labour ,and asking if the Council will have the spoil removed and the road metalled. —Approved and' referred to Works Committee. From Harold L. Jones, application for permission to erect ai small cottage on the Gibson’s Quay road reserve, north of Livingstone Street. — Unable to grant

From J. Schroeder, Sewell Street, asking attention to drains and fences adjoining his property—-It was decided to notify owners of adjoining properties that their fences must be put in satisfactory order. The drains to be reported on by the Chairman of Works.

From the Westland County Council, (halt as it had a number of cemeteries to keep, it could not make any contribution towards the Hokitika cemetery.
