MONTHLY MEETING.

HOKITIKA, December 13. The Hokitika Borough.. Council met this evening-.- Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. G. Heinz, J. Fox, J'- L. Turner,. AV. H. Stouforth, C. Caliari’ A; R. -Elcock, D. p.E, Freitas. An apology , for absence was received from Cr; H. T. Parry. The Mayor moved ft vote of condolence with the wife and relatives of the late H. L; .Michel,—This was carried, members standing. Mr C, Parham was appointed inspector for the borough by-laws. In./Connection with the rating of church properties, the Town Clerk reported 1 on the conference with church representatives.—-As a revaluation of the -town ..properties was taking place, it was resolved to defer the matter until the commencement Of the new financial year. . It was resolved to congratulate a. number- of people who had made efforts to improve the frontages of their residences.—lt was decided to assist the Beautifying Society as far as possible.

Cr. Turner urged attention to the ■streets. He recommended that a loan of £lO,OOO be- raised to put the streets in decent condition for -tar-sealing, etc.

Cr. Stopforth said the streets were a definite- disgrace. They should never have got into their present condition and he Urged immediate attention. Cf. Heinz said the work could be carried out within the Council’s finances if done systematically. He urged work with graders continually. After remarks by other councillors, it was decided to’ have the grader working continuously and that the tiir-sealing be commenced as soon asi possible. Cr. Stopforth reported on the progress of work on Cass Square, including the felling of the dangerous trees and disposal of the wood. The Abattoirs’ report stated: Stock slaughtered for month of November amounted-to IS cows, '25 heifers, 61 bullocks, 357 sheep, 13 lambs, 13 pigs, 2 . c . alves .;' condemned,<-l cow. Fees collected for.month -£6B/-19/6;--fees for corresponding month last • year amounted to .-£69/1/-. Ihe financial statement showed re'£'44l/9/3, expenditure £666

Accounts amounting ’.to -.£ 1192/9/10 were passed for payment.

The Assistant Under-Secretary o Public Works Department wrote that 1 in regard to the areas of 9 acres c roods 24 perches, being Reserve 44a town of Hokitika, and 3 roods, being Lots 18, 19 and 20, D.P. 737, and being part Reserve 492, town of Hokitika all situated in Block 1., Kanieri Suivey District, taken by proclamation dated June 8 last for housing purposes, I have to advise that the Department is now in a position to make a payment of the purchase price agreed upon, namely, £240. A voucher has been prepared and is now under way. The New Zealand Refrigerating Co. wrote, advising that the. following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of November, 1938, viz., 75 sheep. 2 lambs. J. V. Conning (Abattoirs) applied tor an increase in wages. lion. Secretary of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, Ulokitika, wrote, asking for a donation towards the funds of the local sub-centre and requesting the Council to appoint one of its members to represent the Council on tlie executive in place of the late Mr E.
