REEFTON. December 14. A meeting of the Council of the Reefton School of Mines was held last, evening; present: Messrs. J. B. Auld (chairman), James Patterson, R. Dickie C D. Buist, J. Noble, R. Alborn. The secretary (Mr. T. A. Patterson), and Director (Mr. J. Bolitho) were also present. W. Bain wrote, regarding samples ol quartz, and asking if he could obtain assay.—The secretary’s reply that assays of other samples of ores could not be sent to any other applicant was approved. Mr. R. A. Dickie wrote accepting the position as a member of the Council.

The Director’s report stated: —Academic: Classes for the year have now been concluded. During the month, five underviewers were examined for certificates. The results are not yet to hand. Assaying: Last month’s increase in the volume of assaying has been maintained. During the month a total of determinations were carried out as follows: —Bore holes 56, quartz samples 42, coal dust 1, total 99, and one free qualitative test for phosphate. Last month’s total was 99. Mr. Buist suggested that failing any response from the Board of Examiners to the suggestions made by Runanga School of Mines, a meeting be held of delegates from the West Coast School of Mines and coal mine managers to consider the suggestions. It was resolved that Mr. W. Auld be appointed auditor at the usual remuneration.

It was resolved that the School be closed from December 15 to January 15.

The Director was instructed to purchase bromide plates if prices were satisfactory. It was carried that the next meeting be held on January 31. It was carried that Mr. Auld and the Director be authorised to have floor in furnace room repaired. Accounts amounting to £ll2/10/11 were passed for payment. After an absence of over 30 years from the district, Mrs. J. Grey, of Hawera, is visiting her brother. Mr. P. Smith, of Cronadun.
