RUNANGA NOTES

SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

[OUB OWN CORBESPONDENT.]

The monthly meeting of the Runanga School Committee was held last evening, Mr R. J. Armstrong presiding. Present were Messrs C. Kennedy, F. Oakley, R. Ewan and the headmaster (Mr J. A. McLeod). Reporting on the recent shortages in the school milk supply, the headmaster stated that since the matter had been mentioned at the last meeting and published, there had been an improvement in the position, although there was still a steady deficiency.— It was decided that further enquiries be made, and that failing any improvement, the police be informed. Mr I. Malpass wrote, regretting that owing to ill-health he would be unable to adjudicate in the school garden competition. It was decided that tenders be called for the purchase of the water supply pipes leading to the swimming baths, as, with the early installation of the town’s water supply the present pipes would not be required. It was decided to ask the Borough Council to make provision for the supply of water to the baths and that the inlet pipe be as large as possible. On the motion of Mr Oakley, congratulations were extended to the headmaster and his staff on the excellent report received from the schools’ inspectors for the year. The headmaster’s report, as follows, was received as satisfactory: — The present roll number is 129 boys, 135 girls, a total of 264, and the average attendance is 119 boys, 116.1 girls, a total of 235. The Inspector’s report on.the school for 1938 has been received. Owing to wet weather, the picnic and' sports to be held at the beach on December 6 had to be abandoned. Instead, on that afternoon, a party for the children was held in the school, and the sports and races were decided in the school grounds* this afternoon. The 1938 ■'boys’ cricket competition has now been completed. Our team won seven games and lost two. Two boys have been appointed to care for the school lawns du*ring the vacation. The Home Garden Club plots were visited for the first judging on Wednesday, December 7. The staff and pupils extend to the Chairman and members of the committee, the compliments of the season.”

The Chairman congratulated the headmaster on the year’s work, and extended to him and his family., to the staff, and to the committee, Christmas greetings. SCHOOL SPORTS. Owing to the continued bad weather the school sports, which are usually held at the beach, had to be abandoned, and a social and dance was held in the school. The sports programme was held at the school grounds yesterday. The pupils were supplied with soft drinks and ice creams, each c nld receiving a bag of peanuts, a nag of home-made toffee, a cake of ciocolate, and an apple.
