SPORTS GATHERING i i I Ideal conditions prevailed for the • sports gathering held at the Jack’s Mill School, Kotuku, on Saturday; afternoon. The running track was in; good order, having been mown and > divided into three running lanes. The meeting opened with a march past by. the pupils, under the banners of their; respective standards. The older chil-! dren then proceeded to a specially • prepared drill ground, where they, gave a creditable display'of drill and! gymnastic work, composed by the) pupils themselves, - Eight boys and I eight girls competed for the challenge championship cup, presented by
Messrs Jack Bros, and the miniature cup presented by Mr. E. McKeon, Greymouth. The judges for the various events were: Jumping: Mr. S. I Johns and R. Jones runners up (equal) '6pts each. A stop was made for afternoon tea when the officials were invited into the j school room as the guests of the comi mittee, while a boiler of hot water was provided for the visitors of whom i there were a large number. The wives lof the judges, Mrs. S. Sullivan and Mrs. Sutherland were each presented with a bouquet of flowers by the drill leaders, R. O’Brien and H. Mears, who thanked them on behalf of the school for their assistance and hoped that they would have an enjoyable time. A flower show was also held in the school tile results being:—Flowers ■ grown by children in their own home i gardens: J. Priest 1, M. Brereton 2. Vegetables grown in own home garden iby pupils: I. One of the events of the afternoon was the arrival of Uncle Mick’s Sambo who flew over by ’plane in perfect view of (he spectators. In the evening a Sports Dance was ! held beginning with a masked chain ' wa’tz. Music was supplied by Mr. N. • Nestor, Mr. O. Savage, Mrs. Pickering, • Mr. Laffey and Mr. N. Mackenzie. ; The presentation of the cup and prizes was then held and later the s dance concluded with the singing of Old Lang Syne under the spot light provided by Mr. Benson.
