SYNTHETIC RADIUM.

LONDON, September 19. The “News Chronicle” says: After 18 months’ research, Professor F. L. Hopwood has announced that he has discovered an artificial radium known as radio sodium, which is prepared from- common salt, by bombardment of atoms. He says radicy sodium has several important advantages over radium, as it can be administered in capsules, or injected as seven-eighths of its power disappears in two days. It is expected, the paper ’ says, that his discovery will revolutionise treatment of cancer and other diseases.

LOS ANGELES, September 18,

Senator David Waish, chairman of the Senate, Naval Affairs. Committee who is attending the American Legion Convention here, announced that congress ds being asked to appropriate, 1,'490,500 dollars to strengthen the'Pacific Coast naval defences. The largest items are a naval air station at Kodiak (Alaska) and graving docks at Puget Sound and at Mare Island near San Francisco.
