STEERING GEAR MISHAP

WANGANUI, Sptember 19

The motor vessel Holmlea, owned by Holm and Company, bound to Wanganui from Westport with a cargo of coal, signalled a. message, to the pilot, station at. Wanganui about 6 o'clock tonight, that some mishap had occurred to her steering gear and that she was unable to make port without assistance. It had been decided to stand out to sea in the meantime, and if possible effect repair.

To-morrow morning, if the need for assistance is still apparent, the Wanganui Harbour Board’s tug, Kahanui. may put to sea and bring the vessel in. She was in no danger to-night, standing well off shore to the south of the entrance.

The Holmlea is not a regular trader to Wanganui. She usually trades between Wellington. New’ Plymouth and Port Waikato. She is in the coai trade al present because the Rata is undergoing her annual overhaul. The Holmlea. is a small, vessel of 555 tons and has on board a crew of about 14.

SAFE IN PORT

WANGANUI. September 20

The Holmlea. arrived safely this morning. Her steering gear, which had given way, was temporarily repaired at sea, and she came in under her own power.
