GORGE ROAD TRAGEDY.

WELLINGTON, September 19. The two men killed in Ngahauranga Gorge were: — Cornelius Harold Ward, married, living at the Tunnel Camp, Stephen Timlin, single, resident at 17 Hutt Road, Khandallah. There is only one man in hospital, this being Cyril Berry, single, resident at 7 Queen’s Road, Lower Hutt. His condition is not serious.

The fourth man, E. A. Holmes, of Petone, was not taken away by the ambulance. He was standing near, holding a detonator at the time, and was blown some yards* away. He was bruised, but was not incapacitated. He walked away, and afterwards was able to make a statement at a preliminary inquiry.

The men were working at. a steep face at the Johnsonville side of a big cutting to be put through above the abattoirs.

MOTORIST INJURED.

HASTINGS. September 20

Serious head injuries were received hy Robert Mintoff, of Hastings, when two cars collided at the intersection of St. Aqbyn Street and Willopark Road, about 10.30 last evening. He was admitted to the Memorial Hospital. The report at. mid-d'ay was that his condition was very serious. Mintoft was a passenger in a car driven by J. Heenan, of Hastings, who escaped without, injury. The driver of the other vehicle, William George Adams, also of Hastings, was simillarly fortunate that he was not hurt. Women passengers in both cars received slight injuries, but were able to proceed to their homes. As the result of the impact, both cars were overturned and extensively damaged.

FOUND DROWNED

DUNEDIN, September 19

The body of John Pearce, an elderly man, was found to-day in the harbour at Company’s Bay. Deceased, who was married, was missed from his home on the night of August 31, when some articles belonging to him were found on oiie of the mooring piles on the wharf.

GIRL POISONED

OAMARU, September 20

Olga. Clare Fraser, 23, daughter of Mrs Emma Fraser, storekeeper, Oamaru, died at 2.30 this morning, in tragic circumstances. «

Deceased had been to a dance, came home sick, and told her mother she had taken poison. She died about an hour later.
