CRICKET
A DREARY' DAY. ) [by CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] (Recd. September 7, 10 a.m.) LONDON, September 6. The weather was cool and dull, and there was only a handful of spectators. Barnett had an excellent match. He pulled and drove well before offering two chances to Valentine in the gully off Todd, the second of which was accepted. Australia, was 419 ahead, but McCabe neither declared, nor did Waite and Fingleton score over-rapidly. The play thus went on drearily and pointlessly. The crowds welcomed Waite’s dismissal, after taking 95 minutes for 42. The match was drawn. After two stoppages, owing to rain, the captains agreed at 2.20 p.m. to abandon the match. Fingleton’? fifty ocupied 90 minutes. The Englishmen opened in cold weather. Woolley and Fagg batted as though they were only faintly interested. Scores: — AUSTRALIA—First Innings .. CAHN’S TEAM AND COASTt Resentment of the action of the New Zealand Cricket Council in omitting the West Coast from the itinerary drawn up for Sir Julien. Cahn’s team, which will tour the Dominion ea'tly next year, was expressed to the “Star” to-day, by Mr. J. Mathews; treasurer of the West Coast Cricket Association. It is stated that, following upon representations made last year, the Council promised that Greymouth would be included in the itinerary, and no reason lias been given for the change, which is a big disappointment to cricket enthusiasts in this district, especially in view of the fact that it is several decades since an overseas team played in Greymouth. The Association will make further representations to the Council’in the matter.
