RUNANGA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING [OUIS OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The Mayor (Mr. R. McTaggart), presided at last evening’s meeting of the Runanga Borough Council; also present were councillors F. Oakley. E. Kennedy, Y. Rutherford, G. E. English ami J. McTigue. Air. I). Coburn, bus proprietor, wrote in regard to the route to be used with a new vehicle he is placing on Jhe road, requesting that permission be given to use the same route as at. present for the convenience of the public, and that the approach to the bridge at the corner of Hall Jones and Ward Streets be improved.—Permission was granted, the improvements having already ,been carried out.

Mr. H. Patterson applied for a taxi license. —Granted. It was decided that the Town Clerk make enquiries from other local bodies as to the charging of taxi license fees'. Mrs. Shackley wrote in regard to building alterations on her property and also in regard to drainage.—lt was decided to reply that she was responsible for the drainage from her property to the open drain, and that the Council could not carry the dram from the frontage to the open drain. In regard to valuations, it was decided to reply that the Council had nothing to do witli the valuations placed on buildings, this being the responsibility of tiie Valuations Department. Messrs. Keir and Thompson. the successful tenderers for the. water supply scheme, wrote in regard Io the financial arrangements for the contract. —It was decided to reply that work- could commence as early as suited the contractors, and that loan money would be available "for progress payments within six weeks. In any case, tne moneys granted by the Labour Department would lie. available for the initial expenditure which would be in the main for labour, material not being required until later. The State Advances Department wrote offering to lend tlx; E14.00P required, for a period of 10 years at three and a-half per cent. —Accepted. Transfer J. [. Mossop to Alex. Drown. mines (Mi - . C. J. Strongman) wrote agreeing to lend the Council rails lor the water supply scheme a,t a rental of 10 pel' cent, per annum on the cost of the rails.- —Accepted. The Mines Department wrote regretting that it was unable to loan compressors, etc., for the water scheme. ‘

The member for the district (Hon. P. C. Webb) wrote in regard to the Council’s representations for a revaluation of. the Borough, stating that a competent man would be sent by the Valuation Department later, to make an investigation.

HOUSES AND SECTIONS The Housing Department wrote asking that the housing survey be completed and forwarded to \\ eiling-ton.—-It was decided that councillors meet to-night, and complete the work. The Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb) wrote regarding building sites in. Runanga. stating that he was informed that there were over 60 building sections available with reading access. and therefore it was not considered necessary that, more reading to further land need be provided. The District Employment. Officer wrote agreeing to an extension of the subsidised scheme of work on the Domain.-— It was decided to write asking permission to extend the time limit Mr expending the money allotted, owing to several set-backs in the work. The Commissioner of 'transport wrote in regard to the Council’s request that the speed restriction sign be moved from the corner of Pitt Street and Ute main highway to I lie junction of Dunollie road and the main highway, declining to agree Io the proposal. which, he said. would be against the principles laid down. However. the matter could lie raised again later, should the necessity arise.

Building permits totalling £65 were approved. 'rhe Health Inspector's report am! lite Hospital report, were received as satisfactory.

The foreman reported carting .‘l7 loads of ashes and 10 of gravel lor roads. Twelve J ■'-inch and 24 21-iiich concrete pipes had been made, and broken plank's on the bridge at J\ilgour Road had been replaced. Open box drains had been placed across the road in Ballance and Pitt Streets. The timber had been removed from the drains in front of the Miners' Hall, and the drain cleaned from Duncan to Mill Streets. Twenty-live 2ft concrete pipes had already been laid, ami the work was proceeding, Timber, tools, pipes, etc., had been carted t'"- ths water supply scheme. Seddon Street, McGowan Street and Dtmollie Road

had been dragged. Eight cattle had been impounded. There has been an average of 11 men employed at the Domain, where levelling -work is proceeding. The fence on the western side has been removed and will be placed alongside the new road, thus giving a larger area for the Domain. — The report was received as satisfactory. it w;is decided to make application for Lite usual overdraft of £BOO. The Town Clerk was appointed to. countersign the loan debentures. Accounts totalling £B6/15/7 were passed for payment. Domain accounts totalling £26/16/8 were passed for payment. It was reported that the recent concert in aid of the Kotare (Children’s) Domain had netted £7/2/6, and it was decided that the money be spent in providing seats at the Domain, and also in laying down a lily and fish pond. The practicability of a five-day week in the Council’s office was discussed, and it was decided that the Town Clerk submit a schedule of proposed hours, to include attendance for an hour in the evening each Friday, with no Saturday work. If the scheme is practicable, without inconvenience to the public, it will be inaugurated.
