WRESTLING

BLOMFIELD DEFEATS LOPEZ

[per press association.]

AUCKLAND, August 8

A professional wrestling contest between “Lofty” Blomtield, of Auckland, and Vincent Lopez, of Mexico, provided a series of sensations. The first occurred immediately after the opening gong, when Lopez secured a fall with a. body press following a succession of fore-arm jolts. There was a willing exchange of fore-arm jolting at the commencement of the fourth round, and then Blomtield smartly tripped his opponent and applied a Boston crab, to which the Mexican immediately submitted.

Lopez opened the seventh round with flying tackles, to which Blomfield replied. The referee was caught unawares between the two men and fell fo the mat face downwards. He appeared to be groggy, and took a few seconds to realise his position. In the meantime Lopez was endeavouring to pin the Aucklander’s shoulders, and was on the point of doing so when Blomfield suddenly reversed and bad the Mexican’s shoulders on the mat. The referee crawled over on his hands and knees and patted Blomfield on the back, signifying a fall. This meant that Blomfield had won the contest. The referee's action brought an outburst of disapproval among the supporters of Lopez. The latter remonstrated with a controlling’ oflicial and gesticulated wildly with his arms, his evident desire being the cont intuition of the contest. Blomtield's success was loudly acclaimed by a large following. NUMA AND DETTON DRAW WELLINGTON, August 8. Leo Numa.
