QUEEN MARY’S RECORD TIME.
[BY CABLE PRESS ASSN. COPYRIGHT.]
NEW' YORK, August 8
The liner Queen Mary has claimed a new record for the east to west, passage across the Atlantic.
Her commander sent a. radio message that the ship passed the Ambrose lightship at 1.32 a.m., thus establishing a run of 93 hours 48 minutes from Bishop Rock (Scilly Isles) to the lightship. This time is 74 minutes better than the Normandie’s record. The Queen Mary averaged 30.99 knots for the trip of 2907 miles. She also set a record for distance covered in a single day by steaming 790 miles from noon on Friday to noon on Saturday. The Normandie still holds the west to east record of 94 hours seven minutes, although this time does not. equal that set up by the Queen Mary on the east to west journey.
“ALL IN THE' DAY’S WORK”
(Received August. 9, 1 p.m.) LONDON, August 8.
A Cunard official says that the Queen Mary’s record was all in the day’s work. The liner was no:, out for record breaking. The Cunard Company is not claiming the Blue iband as it does not recognise it.
The newspapers point out the Blue Riband depends on average speed, in which the Normandie so far is far faster, averaging 31.2 knots on the eastward run, last year.
