NORTHERLY STORM

GREY DISTRICT DAMAGE. Lashed by a northerly gale, accompanied by heavy rain, to-day, Greymouth must have been one o£ the most unpleasant places in the Dominion. The storm damaged the Taylorville suspension bridge, snapping the guy ropes, interfering with the electric power cable. The bridge is unsafe, and the Brunner Borough workmen proceeded to barricade the approaches. Shortly after 2 p.m., a wireless pole was brought down the gale, and fell across the main power-line at the Shakespeare Street end of Alexander Street. As a result, the electric power was cut off in Greymouth. The breaking of a power line near the Dobson mine affected the supply north of Dobson.

Practically no telegraphic service was available, this afternoon. The lines in the Buller Gorge, and also in the Reefton and Hokitika districts, were all affected, mainly through fallen trees. Trouble also developed on the East Coast, between Christchurch and Blenheim. The radio installation was brought into action by the Telegraph Department, to deal with urgent traffic.
