WELLINGTON, July IS. Leonard Neiling, 25, labourer and brush-maker, charged with causing the death of John Joseph Owen, thereby committing manslaughter, and with assaulting Florence Lily Maud Owen, was remanded to appear at Petone on Wednesday. The charges arise out of incidents alleged to have taken place on June 6 and 7. STATE HOUSES. TE AROHA, July 16. . The first group of State houses erected in the centre of Te Aroha, consisting of eight single houses and two two-unit houses, was officially opened this afternoon by Mr R. Coulter, M.P., Alayor of Te Arolia. Apologies for the absence of Mr J. A. Lee (Under-Secretary in charge of Housing, and Mr C. 11. Burnett, M.P., were received. Mr Coulter said that the houses had been erected because of the acute shortage of places to rent. The rents would range from 15/- to 30/-, according to size. Tenders would shortly be called for another 10 or 12 houses, and later for another group.

MEASLES AT WELLINGTON WELLINGTON, July 17. Though the measles epidemic appears to be easing off in most parts oi! Wellington, it is increasing in the Hutt Valley, according to Dr. F. S. McLean, Medical Officer of Health at Wellington. Dr. McLean said' to-night that there was every likelihood of the disease remaining prevalent for another month or two. Evidence of the severity of the outbreak is that since midnight on Friday 12 persons, including two adults, have been taken to hospital by the ambulance suffering from pneumonia or ether measles complications. Six of that number were taken to-day.
