KUMARA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Kumara Borough Council was presided over by the Mayor (Mr A. B. Spiers), when there were present: Crs Lawrence, Murphy, Langham, Harris, Passmore. McLean, Pamment. Wise, Little. Mr Royds, consulting engineer, wrote, stating that he would arrive in Kumara on Thursday evening. The Town Clerk was instructed to notify the Council on his arrival.

Inspector Schou wrrote, stating lie was leaving for Canterbury, and thanking the Mayor,, Council and Town Clerk for the courteous treatment received during his term on the Coast as sanitary inspector, also stating Mr Kirk, his successor, would do his utmost, to co-operate with the Council, and bespoke for him the same consideration he had received. —The Mayor said Mr Schou had proved himself a ■ good officer and deserved thanks for the way he had carried out his duties. On the motion of Cr. Wise the Town Clerk was directed to reply forwarding a letter of appreciation of Mr Schon’s work in Kumara. ’ The Mayor reported having interviewed Mr OBrien regarding the work of tar-sealing the Beach Road', and that Mr O'Brien had informed him he had gone into the matter with k the Minister, and impressed on him the necessity of having the work carried out. —Resolved that a letter of thanks be forwarded to Mr O’Brien; also, that a letter be sent to Mr Trevor Smith, Public Works Engineer, asking him to expedite the work. The Secretary of the Brigade wrote notifying the Council that a two years’ “honour service bar” was now 7 due to one of the Brigade’s active and efficient members. —Resolved that the request be. complied with. Mr Neville wrote, asking the Council to have some large stones removed from the footpath in the vicinity of his residence. —Left to the Public Works Committee.

Mr Hayes wrote complaining of the attitude of the Town Clerk to him in connection with an application for a building permit.—A£.ter an explanation by the Town Clerk, to which Mr Hayes replied, the matter was allowed to drop. The Chairman of Public Works, reporting on. the work carried out in the borough during the month,, stated an inspection had been made ot the streets and water races, and it was estimated that 75 per cent, of the water coining into the town could be diverted by cutting a drain to one of the deep shafts in the vicinity. The Mayor said small matters such as that mentioned should be carried: out. — r .l he Public ' Works Committee was granted permission to carry out the work when labour w r as available.

A letter was received from Mr O’Brien to the effect that the Minister had notified him that all available unemployed men be employed during the Winter months at full award rates and the full wages bill would be met by the Employment Department. —Resolved that the Town Clerk get in touch with the Employment officer at Greymouth, with the object of finding cut how niany local unemployed were available to undertake work in the borough. The Chairman of the Domain said there was work to be done on the Recreation Ground, but same could not be carried out until after the football season.

Cr. Langham moved “that this Council delegate to the various committees already formed, full power to pursue, investigate and carry out all necessary work. This power not to include any power mentioned in part 6, clause 49 (1) in the Municipal Cirporations Act.’’ Cr. Murphy seconded. —Carried.

Cr. Little moved that the charge for petrol pumps on the roadside be reduced to 30/- per pump per year, and to be retrospective from the date when the charge was originally made. Cr. Langham seconded. —Carried. Accounts amounting to £S7 were passed for payment.
