INDIANS DEFEAT CANTERBURY. [PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, July 2. The Prince of Manavadar’s Indian team played sparkling hockey to de 1 - feat Canterbury by 4 goals to nil at Lancaster Park to-day. The weather was dull and the ground was in a terrible condition, but the crowd of eight thousand was treated, to a clever display of stick-work and positional play by the Indians. Dogged tackling and stopping by Canterbury in the first spell kept the Indians’ score down to three goals. Barnhill was brilliant in goal and saved repeatedly. After the interval Canterbury improved and launched several brilliant attacks. One shot found the net, but obstruction had previously been ruled against the Canterbury player. Fernandez showed exceptional speed on the Indian left wing and made repeated openings, but the ball was sticking in the heavy mud and India added only one goal in the second spell. The Canterbury captain. W. J. Bowden inspired his team by a fine displav at. right {ialf. His stickwork matched that of the Indians. The Canterbury forwards, especially in the second spell, played well above their club form, showing combination and determination to reach the circle and test the Indian goalkeeper. D. Loader, centre half, came through, a heavy day's work with credit, while the Canterbury defence showed cleverness to stop the Indians’ lightning raids. A favourite with the crowd was Gurnarain Singh, who played an excellent game at right back. He exploited the little used scoop shot on many occasions to get his side out of trouble. Eastern Southland, the premier women’s hockey side of lhe Dominion. The game, was marked by brilliant (lashes of play, England scoring two goals and Eastern one. The visitors showed superiority on attack and defence, but did not have it all their own way, the game being most exciting from whistle, to whistle. Goals for England were scored by Misses Donoghue and West. For Eastern, Miss S'herriff netted. WELLINGTON RESULTS. WELLINGTON, July 2.
