HOKITIKA, June 21

Tlie monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council look place yesterday- Present: The Mayor (Mr GA. Peiry), Crs. A. R. Elcock, W. HStoplorth, F. E. Freitas, J. Fox, J. LTurner. C. Caliari. G. Heinz, IL IParry. An apology was received from Cr. 11. L. Michel. The financial statement showed receipts £395/4/1, expenditure £917 11/11. Accounts amounting to £978 3/7 were passed for payment. Abattoirs report: Stock slaughtered for month of May amounted to 47 cows, 37 heifers, 64 bullocks, IS calves, 310 sheep. 54 lambs, 15 pigs; condemned, 1 cow and 3 sheep. Fees collected for month £B7/3/6; fees collected for corresponding month last year £B4/8/6.

A deputation consisting of Messrs E. Heenan, A. H. Lawn and C. L. Harper, waited on the Council on behalf of the Westland Rugby SubUnion, asking for attention to theplaying grounds on Cass Square.— Their suggestion as to rolling the area was agreed to, as was the proposal to allow cars to be admitted to the cycling track during matches at a small charge. It was generally agreed that the fixtures round Cass Square were an increasing danger and should be removed as soon as possible. After considerable discussion on the Ministers’ Association’s protest against Sunday entertainments, it was resolved that all net proceeds be deposited in the Mayor’s fund specially for charitable purposes, and also that a balance-sheet of each entertainment be forwarded' to the Council. The following report of the Works Committee was adopted: — (1) A 9in. sewer through Mrs Cameron’s property to connect with Tancred Street drain. The distance, seven chains, estimated cost of material £l6. This drain to provide for , the household drainage of houses on the east side of Revell Street between Hampden and Park Streets. (2) Piping four chains of 9in. pipes from the north boundary of Mr Eggling’s property on Gibson’s Quay to the river, and also one chain of 9in. pipes across Rolleston Street to carry off -the stagnant water from the watercourse. (3) One chain of sewer pipes along the east side af Jollie Street from the intersection of Hampden Street and an open drain for the rest of the distance. It is estimated that there are sufficient secondhand 9in. sewer pipes on hand to complete these three jobs on the assumption that subsidised labour will be available. (4) Extend the present sewer in Revell Street for a distance of 1G chains to Spencer Street, using . 10 chains of new 12in. sewer pipe, j Total cost of material ( including tim-i ber) £lBO. It is suggested that labour; be obtained for this job under scheme 13. Balance of six chains 9in. pipes to he used. (5) Making a supply of concrete drainage pipes. (6) Improving the drainage in Cass Square., as in-

dicated in the letter Horn the Westland Rugby Football Sub-Union. (<) lhat Hoffman Street be formed for about c distance of six chains north of Stafford Street.. Formation to be 10ft wide and creek to be piped. (8) Clearing land and forming road at* the cemetery. (9) Reconditioning streets and footpaths preparatory to tar-seal-ing. (10) In connection with the foregoing jobs it,is recommended that the Council apply for up to 20 men under Employment Scheme No. 13 (1937—180) for a period of approximately 26 weeks. (11) The Works Committee also recommend that the Government be asked for some financial assistance, which is now being granted to sports bodies to improve the cycling track in Cass Square ami any other necessary improvements in the interests of the sporting bodies(l2) That when men are employed under Employment Scheme No. 13 that adequate supervision be provided by the Council and that the foreman be empowered to dispense with the services of any man who is not giving satisfactory service. (13) That the Council sell the Mather Platt pump for £l5O i'.o.r. Hokitika and the Asea ‘lO h.p. motor and starter for £9O, i'.o.r. Hokitika. (14) That all temporary employees be paid off on June 17-

Wth regard to Cr. Heinz’s notice of motion, that a suitable motor lorry be purchased, it was decided to have a report from the Town Clerk as to the amount likely to be saved,, the matter being deferred until the special meeting. Zealand ,an appeal for contribution to improve the financial position of the Society.—One guinea granted. From J. L. Pugh, contractor, application for extension of water mains to provide domestic water service connections to new houses to be erected by the Government on Municipal Reserve No. 445. —Granted and installed. From J. L. Pugh, asking the Council to forward an estimate of the cost of necessary repairs to the fotpath on the frontage of the new National Bank building.—Agreed. Regarding household drain at Mr Gillman’s new house, Sewell Street, and asking whether the Council intends to instal a sewer.—To make own arrangements in the meantime. From Secretary, Westland Hospital Board, advising that owing to certain necessary adjustments the Borough proportion of the Westland Hospital levy for the current year had been increased to £1784/15/6, payable in nine payments of £I9S/6/2 each. — Approved. From Hon. Secretary Hokitika Ministers’ Asociation expressing regret that the action of the Borough Council in granting permission for the opening of the Princess Theatre for the purpose of introducing Sunday pictures. More than this, it wishes to protest as strongly as possible against such, action, and reminds the Council that it represents a large proportion of the community. We deplore the fact that after so many years this permission should be thus granted. Together with this, the Association wishes to state that it is out of sympathy with all Sunday entertainments and wishes to see them discouraged.— I No action taken.

From New Zealand Master Butchers’ Industrial Association of Employers, stating that the Association is at the present time preparing evidence to place before the Agricultural and Pastoral Committee in regard to the “Slaughter of Stock Inspection of Meat Bill.” It is desired to obtain information with a view to showing the serious effect of open killings in Municipal Abattoirs as a resu,lt of the competition of meat export slaughterhouses, which are selling meat at their works retail to the public.
