A London cablegram announced that the Countess of Strathmore, mother of Queen Elizabeth, is progressing favourably. No more bulletins will be issued.

A London cablegram stated that the Duke of Connaught, the only surviving son of Queen Victoria, celebrated his eighty-eighth birthday yesterday at Bagshot. He is in good health.

The death occurred at Christchurch, last evening, of Mr. W. J. Wood, aged 74 years. Mrs. F. W. Baillie, of Cobden, is a daughter of deceased. Air. Baillie left, this afternoon, to attend the funeral, which will take place to-morrow.

The death occurred at Christchurch, on Saturday, of John Gregory, a native of Australia, aged 79 years, after a lengthy illness. Deceased who had spent the greater part of his life in Christchurch, was predeceased by his wife about 10 years ago. He is survived by one son, Rev. Father A. Gregoryof Greymouth. The funeral will take place at Christchurch tomorrow.

Dr. E. L. Fitzgerald, of Brunner, will leave on Thursday to take an appointment as Superintendent of the Auckland Infirmary. At the Kaiata links, yesterday afternoon, Dr. Fitzgerald was farewelled by members of the Greymouth Golf Club. On behalf of members, the President (Mr. W. Meldrum) expressed best wishes to Dr. Fitzgerald for his continued health and happiness, and expressed the regret of members at his departure from the district.

The death occurred yesterday morning, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. D. Ross, Mawheraiti. of Mrs. Ruth McLennan, a native of Melbourne. aged 86 years. Deceased, who had been ailing for some time, came to New Zealand as a child, and had since resided on the West Coast. For 55 years, she lived at Hukarere, where she conducted the Post Office, and a general store. Her husband - , the late John McLennan predeceased her 21 years ago. She is survived by three sons, Messrs George McLennan (Greymouth), John and Allan (Hukarere), three daughters Mesdames D. Ross (Mawheraiti), E. Provis (Reefton), J. Henderson (Greymouth); also four brothers Messrs Albert Fairhall (Greymouth), Thomas Fairhall (Rangiora), and Alfred and Leonard Fairhall (Australia) and two sisters Miss R. Fairhall (Auckland), and Mrs. Cameron Smith (Christchurch); also twentyseven grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. The funeral will take place at the Reefton cemetery, tomorrow afternoon.
