PERSONAL NOTES

Mr Charles E. Begg, General Manager of Messrs Charles Begg and Co., and Mr L. Travers, Christchurch Manager, arrived yesterday on a visit to Greymouth.

A London cablegram stated that the “Daily Mail” announced the Queen’s mother, the Countess of Strathmore, is seriously ill at her London home. Queen Elizabeth visited her twice. A later message says the Countess of Strathmore is slightly better. She came to London to attend the wedding, which is to take place to-day, between Viscount Anson, eldest son of the Earl of Lichfield, and the Hon. Anne Bowes-Lyon, the Queen’s niece.

Mr A. W. H. MacKenzie, who has been on relief dutyi in the Locomotive Branch of the Railways Department. Greymouth, for some months past, will leave to-morrow, on return to Addington. Mr McKenzie who has been instructor to the Greymouth Main School Boxing. Club, was presented with a fireside chair, suitably, inscribed, from members of the club, and a set of stainless cutlery from the school staff.

Miss Edna Coombe and Mr T. Wood, whose marriage will take place to-morrow morning, were, entertained by St. Patrick’s Church choir, and St. Anne’s Sewing Guild, at the residence of Mr and Mrs W. Connor, Chapel Street, last evening. Very Rev. Father’ Long made t-he presentation of a dinner service, on behalf of both organisations, and extended best wishes to the guests for their future health and happiness,

A former administrator of the game of Rugby in Canterbury, and one of the best-known identities of football in New Zealand, Mr. S. F. Wilson, died at Christchurch to-day. Patron of the Albion Club, and a life member of the Canterbury Union, he represented New Zealand at the international conference in 1924. Under his regime, the game prospered in Canterbury, and the standards of the present day are due, in many respects, to his sound advice and capable leadership.—Press Assn.

The death occurred this morning, at Auckland, after a brief illness, of Mrs Jane McDonald, wife of Stephen McDonald, aged 62 years. Deceased, a native of Reefton, was a daughter of the late Mr. W. Campbell, of Mitchell and Campbell, coach proprietors, and had resided on the West Coast until IS years ago, when she removed to Auckland. She is survived by her husband and three sons; also three brothers, Andrew (Reefton), William (Upper Hutt), and Joseph (Australia); and two sisters, Misses E. and B. Campbell ( Greymoutb).
