COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING. I [ (Hili OWN COKKESI’ONDENT. J REEFTON, April 27The monthly meeting of the Inanguliiifi County Council was held today. Present: Crs. F- W. Archer (chairman). F. Scawright. G. IL McJnroe. T. Watson, W. Clayion. W. 8. Clarke. F. A. Collis wrote regarding water charge on shop and dwelling and on outside tap.—Charge amended as questedThe Blackwater Mines, Ltd., wrote asking for consent to construct and use an electrical generating plant at Waiuta—Consent given. The Hon. Secretary of the Centennial Organisation wrote regarding contribution and matters in connection with Hie West Coast Court. — Council's allocation to be paid. The Mining Valuer wrote giving final figures lor valuation of mining property as under: —Reefton Riding: Capital value £16,035; value of Jm provements, 12,600: unimproved, ■ £.3,435. Boatman’s Riding: £34.755 — £30.225—£4,530. Antonios Riding £438.746— £268,845—£169,901. Crush- 1 ington Riding £16,755 —£14,760 — £1,995. Maruia Springs Riding £ 1.020— £ 570— £ 450. T. Learmont forwarded for the Council’s approval and consent part Section 171, Block XL, Mawheraiti S.D.—Approved. The District Engineer of Public Works Department wrote regarding the widening of portion of Black-water-Waiuta road, and from Gallacher and Smith, tender for same work.—Cr. Mclnroe moved and Cr. Clayton seconded, that the tender be accepted.—Carried. The Secretary of Alexander Mines Ltd. wrote regarding Stevenson’s Flat Track.—Referred to the Engineer, with power to act. The Pyramid Coal Syndicate wrote regarding classification of Boatmans short track.—Transport Department to be asked to re-classify the road. Several ratepayers wrote requesting improvements to be macle to the river bank to prevent flooding.—Cr. Clarke moved and Cr. Watson seconded, that the Engineer prepare proposals for protective works. Clarke seconded, that the Tourist Department be written to pointing out the difference between conditions prevailing at present and when Hie lease of Maruia Springs was granted

A i esolution was passed that, provided the Waitahu Gold Mining Company procure stringers, the Council will erect a new bridge.

Cr. Clarke moved and Cr. Watson seconded, that road applied for by Mr Mnrcctt be repaii cd—Carried. Cr. Clayton moved and Cr. Mclnroe seconded, that the action of Hie Engineer in the. matter of protective works at Mai Mai be approved.—Carried.

The reports of the Engineer and Traffic Inspector were adopted. The Chairman presented a review of the work of the Council (luring its three years of office- In this time the highway from the Inangahua Junction to Big River bridge had been taken over b>’ the Highways Board, without cost to the Council. He considered that the Council had something to show for the County funds expended- He thanked the councillors for support accorded him as chairman, and the clerical staff and the outride staff for their work during "the period.

Cr. Clayton thanked the Chairman for his good wishes. The Council had saved £406 per year to the ratepayers. The maintenance of the highway from Reefton to Springs Junction was now the care of the Highways Board, the Council contributing £lO per mile to this work. Improvements had been made in the County .without recourse to borrowing, and although in 1935 the bank overdraft was £593 and £2t376 in IJ>3B; plant valued at £2,757 has been added to the Council’s equipment.

The County Clerk, Mr W. B. Auld, thanked all the councillors for their

support. In the month of May he will have had 25 years’ service with the Council. It. was resolved that the Engineer repair Mellet’s Road. HOSPITAL BOARD REEFTON. April 28. The monthly meeting of the. Inangaliua Hospital Board was held last evening; present: Messrs. J. B. Auld (Chairman). F. Scawright, G. B. MeInroe. T. Watson. F. W. Archer. .Miss Perotli wrote asking if the Board would consider purchasing property in Broadway. —It was resolved to make applicant an offer of £250 for sections. Isobel McKenzie wrote, resigning position as probationer nurse. The. Department of Health wrote icgarding the'position of secretary to the Board, and new appointment for same; advising that Mr. J. Banks held the best qualifications for position.—Mr. Mclnrce moved and Mr. Archer seconded that Mr. A. E. Willis be appointed secretary. Mr. Seawrigbl moved, as an aineii'lnielli, that Mr. Banks be appointed, seconded by Mr. Watson. The amendment was lost, and the motion was carried. It was resolved that the Department of Health be advised of the appointment of new secretary, who will take up his duties on June I. The Department of Health wrote regarding allowances .to pensioners, and amounts to be obtained by Hospital Boards. —It was resolved to advise the Department of rates obtained by the Board. Mr. Archer moved and Mr. Mclnroe seconded, that the estimates be approved.—Carried. ■ Matron Kane reported for month, that Miss I. McKenzie had resigned, and' Nurse Hepburn had taken over temporary duty as night nurse. Mr. Seawright moved, and Mr. Archer seconded, that Nurse Hepburn be appointed to a permanent position. —Carried.

The Medical Superintendent, reported: Admissions 361 discharged 3, deaths 2, in-patients 36. births 10. X-ravs 10, out-patients 12. attendances 27. The chairman thanked Board members for the support, accorded him during his period in office.
